Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R — India’s largest-selling car for the last four financial years — has topped the sales charts during January-June 2025 as well, data reviewed by FE showed.
Maruti Suzuki sold 101,424 units of this hatchback during January-June — maintaining the lead that started in FY22 (189,000 units) and continued in FY23 (212,340 units), FY24 (200,177 units), and FY25 (198,451 units).
The only two times the Wagon R has been pipped by any car were in CY24, when Tata Punch (202,031 units) outsold the Wagon R (190,855 units), and CY23, when Maruti Suzuki Swift (203,469 units) had beaten it (201,301 units).
Automotive experts told FE that the success of the Wagon R can be attributed to its clever combination of practicality (it has a tall boy design and spacious cabin), affordability (it’s priced between Rs 6-8 lakh), and Maruti Suzuki’s vast sales and service network (more than 3,500 outlets).
During January-June, Hyundai Creta stood at the second position and was sold 100,560 units. But this premium SUV — priced between Rs 11-20 lakh — beat the Wagon R in the month of June with a sales figure of 15,786 units (vs 12,930 units of Wagon R).
The Creta — previously available in petrol and diesel — got a boost in January when its electric variant was launched. Backed by three powertrains, it was India’s best-selling car for three months in 2025 — March, April, and June.
The next five positions were taken by Maruti Suzuki models — the Dzire (96,101 units), Brezza (93,729 units), Swift (93,098 units), Ertiga (91,991 units), and Fronx (88,066 units). At the eighth position was Tata Nexon (87,267 units), at the ninth Mahindra Scorpio (85,648 units), and at the tenth position was Tata Punch (84,579 units).
As far as body styles are concerned, there were six SUVs in the top 10 (Creta, Brezza, Fronx, Nexon, Scorpio, and Punch), followed by two hatchback cars (Wagon R and Swift), one sedan (Dzire), and one MPV (Ertiga).
The 11-13th positions are taken up by three Maruti Suzuki cars — Baleno (81,566 units), Eeco (66,257 units), and Grand Vitara (56,050 units) — followed by Hyundai Venue (54,003 units), Mahindra Bolero Neo (47,238 units), Mahindra XUV 3XO (45,979 units), Kia Sonet (45,277 units), Mahindra Thar Roxx (37,651 units), Toyota Hyryder (34,218 units), and Kia Carens (34,056 units).
In the top 20, there are nine Maruti Suzuki models; four Mahindra models; two each of Hyundai, Tata, and Kia; and one Toyota model.
