Volkswagen Golf GTI, Tiguan R-Line India launch confirmed for this year

Upon launch, the Volkswagen Golf GTI will lock horns with Mini Cooper S which is priced at Rs 44.90 lakh (ex-showroom).

Volkswagen has made the biggest announcement of the year already. The German carmaker will be bringing two iconic models to India which is bound to uplift the moods of true automotive enthusiasts. Through a press release, VW has officially announced that it will bring the Golf GTI and the Tiguan R-Line to India.

Commenting on the same, Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen India, said, “Volkswagen brand has been known for the performance, driving dynamics, build quality and safety of its products, offering a wide product portfolio to millions of customers across the world. Our made-in-India, made-for-the world, Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus, have carried forward these global credentials in India as well.”

Both these models will hit the Indian roads in the second quarter of 2025, i.e. between April and June this year. Although not officially confirmed, both models are most likely to come to India as a fully-imported CBU model. Volkswagen hasn’t shared any other official details about the upcoming models.

Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line

The current-gen Tiguan has been on sale in India since 2021 which is locally assembled at the company’s Aurangabad plant through Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits. The R-Line is the sportier version of the premium mid-size SUV and Volkswagen will reportedly bring 300 units of the same to India. This version gets sportier interior and exterior cosmetic upgrades over the standard Tiguan in addition to a more potent powertrain.

Based on the upgraded MQB Evo platform is available with multiple powertrain options including mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel. In India, the all-new Tiguan R-Line is most likely to use the 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine.This power mill is paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission, sending power to all four wheels via VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

Volkswagen Golf GTI

VW bringing the Golf GTI to India is the biggest update from the German carmaker in a long time. The Golf is the most popular hot hatchback globally and its sportiest avatar is about to reach Indian shores in a couple of months. The Golf GTI is the second VW model to don the coveted ‘GTI’ badge after the Polo GTI. 

The exterior boasts striking 18-inch black alloy wheels, GTI badges, bold red accents, aggressive front and rear bumpers, and a dual-tone full-roof spoiler for a sporty appeal. Inside, the cabin features a spacious 12.9-inch infotainment screen, 30-color ambient lighting, heated front seats, surround lighting with a welcome function, wireless charging, and an e-SIM for seamless connectivity.

Reports indicate that select dealers have started accepting bookings for the Golf GTI in India unofficially. The hot hatchback is expected to carry a sticker price of Rs 52 lakh (ex-showroom). Powering the Golf GTI will be a 2.0-liter TSI (EA888 evo4), turbocharged inline-4 engine that generates 261 hp and 370 Nm of torque. Transmission duties will be carried out by a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. As for performance, the Golf GTI does 0-100 kmph in 5.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 kmph.
