Volkswagen is one global auto OEM which is at the forefront of transition to electric mobility. The German carmaker recently teased the company’s upcoming entry-level electric SUV for international markets. Let us look at what to expect from this compact battery-powered SUV and whether or not this will find its way to India.

Volkswagen electric SUV: Based on ID.2all

The upcoming electric SUV is based on the same platform ID.2all electric hatchback concept which was revealed a few months back. This skateboard electric architecture is a shortened version of the MEB Entry platform which underpinning the brand’s upcoming range of born electric vehicles. The SUV will be built alongside the ID.2all hatchback in Spain.

Volkswagen is yet to zero in on a specific name for this entry-level electric SUV, but the current numerical nomenclature is expected to be phased out over the coming years. The German brand has already confirmed plans to retain the Golf, Tiguan, and Passat nameplates. Therefore, there’s a probability that this compact electric SUV could be named T-Cross, the model it will eventually replace.

Volkswagen electric SUV: Specs & features

Like the ID.2all hatch, the upcoming compact electric SUV will be a front-wheel driven vehicle with a single-motor setup kicking out 220 bhp. It will come with two battery options–  38kWh and 56kWh. The bigger unit is said to deliver a claimed range of around 450 km. According to reports, the 56kWh battery pack could come with a 125kW charging capability that could take just 20 minutes to charge from 10 to 80%.

In terms of dimensions, the crossover will measure around 4.1m long with a wheelbase of 2,600mm. Further, it is expected to exceed the ID 2’s boot capacity of 490 litres, but will get the same 50-litre lockable box under the boot floor for charging cables and valuables.

Cabin interiors of the upcoming VW electric SUV is expected to carry the same layout as the previewed in the ID.2all concept unveiled earlier this year. This will include highlights such as a 12.9-inch infotainment screen and a 10.9-inch digital driver display. Volkswagen will also bring back physical switches for the audio and climate controls.

Volkswagen electric SUV: Expected India launch

Production-spec model of the VW entry-level electric SUV will reportedly make its global debut in 2026 shortly after the debut of the ID.2all electric hatchback. While Volkswagen is yet to announce its EV strategy for India, an all-electric compact electric SUV will surely be on the cards for most developing markets like India.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen plans to bring the flagship ID.5 electric SUV to India as a fully imported Completely Built Unit (CBU). This electric SUV is expected to land on Indian soil sometime in 2024 or 2025.
