Tesla, the US electric carmaker, has opened its first charging station in India. Weeks after officially launching the Model Y in India, the carmaker has officially inaugurated its charging station at One BKC in the Bandra-Kurla Complex. The company plans to open three more in Mumbai soon.
Tesla charging station India
A few weeks back, Tesla made its official entry into India with the launch of the Model Y. Priced at Rs 59.89 lakh, ex-showroom, the Model Y was quick to gain attention — some for the company finally commencing operations, and some for the pricing of the Model Y. That said, Tesla had mentioned that it will soon set up superchargers in India.
Following the launch, the first station has been set up, and the new Tesla supercharging station features four V4 supercharging stalls (DC chargers) and four destination charging stalls (AC chargers). Tesla has also announced that there will be three more such facilities in Lower Parel, Thane and Navi Mumbai by September.
The Supercharger can charge the Model Y with up to 250kW of power, and per kW costs Rs 24. When taking this into consideration and the Model Y’s battery pack size, it will cost Rs 1,500 for a full charge. The wall charger, on the other hand, costs Rs 14 per kW.
The official announcement was quick to gather comments, and most users have welcomed the move, with some saying that it was quick for Tesla to set up the charging station. Some have had negative comments, primarily about the maintenance and how it should be maintained without people vandalising it.
Tesla Model Y India launch
Tesla’s first offering for the Indian market is the Model Y, which is available in two variants: Rear-wheel drive, and Rear-wheel drive long range. The variants offer a different range and have different acceleration figures, and charging a massive battery pack such as the Model Y needs to be quick.
With the supercharger, the Tesla Model Y can be charged from 10-80% in 20 minutes, and the car can have a range of over 300km in just 15 minutes. With the AC charger, the Tesla Model Y’s battery pack needs almost 12 hours of charging.
