Top Tesla executives who know the ins and outs of the universe of the Elon Musk-led company have spilt the beans on the highly anticipated Cybercab. Speaking to industry expert Sandy Munro, Lars Moravy, VP of Vehicle Engineering, and Franz von Holzhausen, Senior Design Executive, revealed the battery specifications, design and real-world range of the autonomous car.

Tesla Cybercab: What to expect?

Based on the cost-effective Model 2, which was later scrapped from Tesla and renamed as Cybercab. First things first, what is the Cybercab’s battery specs? The two-seater EV will be powered by an under 50 kWh battery with a real-world drive range of around 480 km. “We want our road taxi to last the full usage of a day,” said Moravy.

Moravy explained to make the vehicle as efficient as possible each detail has been designed aerodynamically including the wheel covers. Holzhausen explains that the unique teardrop shape of the Cybercab plays an important role in efficiency. “It is quite narrow at the rear compared to the front and the aero efficiency is a huge factor to get a higher range with a smaller (battery) pack.”

Tesla Cybercab: Launch timeline

Moravy gave everyone a peek at the timeline of the Cybercab. He said the unsupervised full self-driving version will first take place in Austin, Texas, later this summer. The installation of this equipment has already started in Giga Texas and Moravy expects the first set of prototypes to be out by this summer. Moravy said, “I think Elon said 2026 (for the launch of the Cybercab) and I plan to meet that date.”

Tesla Cybercab: What is it?

Tesla’s Cybercab is a fully self-driving car that doesn’t need any human input including no steering and no pedals. It doesn’t need any supervision either. The first thing you’ll notice is that it’s missing a steering wheel or brake pedals. It’s a compact two-seater with Gullwing doors, so it can ferry only two passengers. What is even more impressive is that it can be charged wirelessly.
