The long-awaited Tata Tiago was finally launched in India on April 6, 2016 at a mouthwatering starting price of Rs 3.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). At this price, the Tiago undercuts all of its rivals including the Maruti Celerio, Hyundai i10 and Chevrolet Beat.
Now that the Tiago is on sale, we compare its specifications with its closest rival Maruti Celerio which has been leading the segment ever since its launch.
Tata Tiago vs Maruti Celerio – Specifications
Both the Tiago and Celerio are available in petrol and diesel engine options. While the Tiago gets a 1.05-litre diesel (69bhp, 140Nm) and a 1.2-litre petrol (84bhp,114Nm) units, the Celerio comes with a 0.8-litre diesel (47bhp, 125Nm) and a 1.0-litre petrol (67bhp, 90Nm) mills. If we talk about the power figures, Tata’s small hatch clearly has a huge lead over the Celerio.
Tata Tiago vs Maruti Celerio – Prices
Despite being more powerful and more feature-rich, the Tata Tiago comes at a much less price than the Celerio. While the Tiago is priced between Rs 3.20 lakh – Rs 5.54 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Celerio costs between Rs 4.0 lakh – Rs 5.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Tata Tiago vs Maruti Celerio – Mileage
In terms of fuel efficiency, both the vehicles won’t disappoint their buyers. The Tata Tiago petrol and diesel variants are claimed to return 23.84kmpl and 27.28kmpl respectively. The Celerio petrol and diesel variants, on the other hand, return 23.1kmpl ane 27.62kmpl respectively. Having said that, mileage of both the vehicles will be almost similar in real driving conditions.
One interesting thing to note here is the fact that the Tiago manages to return the fuel efficiency equal to the Celerio despite having bigger capacity powertrains.

With more powerful engines, less price and almost similar fuel efficiency figures, the Tiago surely is a better value-for-money product than the Celerio.
