Grammy-winning singer, Sheryl Crow has decided to part ways from her Tesla, donating the funds to National Public Radio (NPR). The 63-year-old singer revealed this was an act of protest against Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has repeatedly stated that his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) plans to cut the federal funding of NPR.

Crow posted a video on Instagram waving goodbye to her Tesla as a flatbed truck drove it away. The video clip featured the duet Time to Say Goodbye Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman playing in the background.

So long Tesla

Crow is well-known for her outspoken political views and has been a staunch supporter of environmental causes. In a post on Instagram, the Nashville-based singer had written — “My parents always said… you are who you hang out with. There comes a time when you have to decide who you are willing to align with. So long Tesla.” The singer did not reveal the amount the car was sold for, but confirmed — “Money donated to @npr, which is under threat by President Musk, in hopes that the truth will continue to find its way to those willing to know the truth.’

NPR saga

Both US President Donald Trump and Musk have raised questions over NPR’s political bias views. Reports state that NPR receives 1 per cent of its funding from the federal government while the rest is from sponsors and donors. Last year, ahead of Trump’s second term, Musk renewed the push to defund NPR.

Things took a turn for the worse at NPR when a senior editor Uri Berliner resigned after 25 years with the organisation. He accused NPR’s CEO, Katherine Maher of having “divisive views”. Prior to resigning, Berliner was suspended by NPR following his scathing write-up in Free Press where he stated “An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR…”.
