The month of April has been nothing short of a roll coaster ride in the automobile sector. Leading from the front is Maruti Suzuki registering 135,962 units in May, which is a 5.6% year-on-year decline as it sold 144,002 units in May 2024. In terms of month-on-month, the automobile company saw a drop as April managed 138,704 units. We focus on the number two position, which continues to be a three-way race, but Mahindra managed to build a comfortable lead over Hyundai and Tata Motors as both registered a decline.
Mahindra zooms in to take second place
The SUV specialist, Mahindra, powered its way to snatch second place from Hyundai and Tata Motors as it sold 52,431 units, which was a massive 21% jump year-on-year. The Indian automobile company continues to grow from strength to strength as it saw a hike of 28% in April when it sold 52,330 SUVs. On a fiscal year-to-date basis for FY26, Mahindra has sold 104,761 utility vehicles in the domestic market, marking a 24% jump compared to the 84,226 units sold during the same period in FY25.
Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd, said, “In May, we achieved SUV sales of 52,431 units, a growth of 21%, and total vehicle sales of 84,110 units, a 17% growth compared to the same month last year. Thanks to continued demand for our products, we were able to deliver industry-leading growth across our ICE and BEV portfolio.”
Tug of war: Hyundai Vs Tata Motors
Hyundai broke its fourth place streak as it took the second runner place elbowing Tata Motors out of the way. The South Korean company’s total sales were 58,701 units, including exports. The company registered domestic sales of 43,861 units, an 11% drop year-on-year. The good news is that export sales of 14,840 units saw a mild increase of 3%.
Tata Motors, on the other hand, also saw a decline of 11% with 41,557 units as the company registered 46,697 units in May 2024.
