Kia files new trademark ‘Syros’ in India — What is it?

Kia recently teased the India-bound EV3 electric SUV in India which will essentially be an all-electric Seltos derivative.

Kia has multiple new models in development currently, some of which are likely to come to India too. The Korean carmaker’s next big launch will be a new-gen model of Carnival. As mentioned in our earlier report, Kia is working on a subcompact electric SUV specifically for the Indian market.

Last year, Kia filed a new trademark for the name ‘Clavis’ in India. It was reported to be the new subcompact SUV from Kia in lines with its Korean cousin– Hyundai Exter— taking on Tata Punch. This SUV will be slotted below Sonet in Kia’s lineup. Now, Kia has filed another trademark in India for the name ‘Syros’.

Kia Syros: Electric SUV or ICE SUV?

Kia could use the ‘Syros’ in either the combustion engine subcompact SUV or the all-electric SUV. In that case, the Clavis nameplate will be used for the other model. In our opinion, Syros is likely to be reserved for the battery-powered SUV. The ICE model is most likely to be based on Exter, and hence its underpinnings and powertrains have already been developed.

Therefore, the fossil-fueled SUV is likely to make its debut in India ahead of the fully electric model. Test mules of this model have been spotted on several occasions for the past few months. This also suggests that the model is closer to launch. On the other hand, the electric subcompact SUV hasn’t been spied testing yet, so its launch might take a while.

Both SUVs are likely to be broadly based on Kia’s current “Opposites Unite” design philosophy. That said, there are hardly any details for either of them, especially the battery-powered model since it will be an all-new born electric SUV. Like other Kia models, both upcoming cars will be premium offerings for their respective segments.

Hence, both models will be packed to the gills when it comes to features. There isn’t any information as to powertrain specs to be offered in the all-electric model. The ICE model, on the other hand, will most probably be powered by the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine as the Exter. This motor kicks out 82 bhp and 114 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options will be carried out either by a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox.
