Hyundai has launched the most affordable Exter CNG trim in its lineup, featuring the twin tank setup. Priced at Rs 7.50 lakh, ex-showroom, the micro SUV goes up against Tata Punch’s entry-level variant, the Pure. At Rs 7.20 lakh, the Tata SUV is around Rs 20,000 cheaper, but there’s a lot more to consider like features, practicality, and safety. Let’s take a closer look at how they stack up.

It’s the clash of entry-level CNG micro SUVs as the new Exter CNG EX takes on the Punch Pure CNG. Don’t be deceived by the exteriors as the Exter is taller than the Punch, but the latter is taller and wider. The Exter’s wheelbase is a whisker 5 mm longer than the Punch. As both SUVs come with a dual tank setup, this translates into a fairly usable boot space.

As we are focusing on the entry-level variants, we find out whether the Exter manages to squeeze past the Punch. Starting from the exteriors, both are equipped with halogen headlights, but the Exter sports LED tail lamps. Step in inside the SUVs welcome you with fabric upholstery, front power windows and adjustable headrests, but here again, the Exter offers that extra ingredient — height adjustment function for the driver’s seat. To keep things functional, the Exter and the Punch get a semi-digital instrument cluster and a manual air conditioner, but the Tata SUV has two additional features — tilt steering and the convenience the doors open up to 90 degrees.Â
The Hyundai micro SUV comes standard with six airbags, while the Punch gets a twin airbag set-up. One could expect an update soon. The Punch does feature Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which is not available in the Exter. Apart from this, the two SUVs are evenly matched with ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, 3-point seatbelts and much more.

The Exter CNG and the Punch CNG are powered by 1.2-litre petrol engines with the former getting a 4-cylinder powerplant and the latter a 3-cylinder. The Exter CNG produces 68 bhp at 6000 rpm and 95.2 Nm at 4000 rpm. The Punch, on the other hand, churns out 72.4 bhp at 6000 rpm and 103 Nm at 3250 rpm. Both are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
