General Motors recalls over 62,000 vehicles in US due to brake fire risk

GM says the defective assembly may let brake fluid leak into the pressure switch, causing a short circuit and leading to a potential fire.

General Motors (GM) is recalling 62,468 Chevrolet Silverado trucks in the United States due to a safety risk associated with the brake pressure sensor assembly. According to a notice from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a defect in the brake system may cause fluid leakage, which could lead to an electrical short and potentially result in an engine compartment fire.

The issue stems from the use of an unauthorized chemical by the brake assembly supplier, which may cause a rubber component in the sensor to degrade over time. This degradation increases the risk of a short circuit that could generate excessive heat, posing a fire hazard—even when the vehicle is turned off or left unattended.

The recall affects select 2019–2024 Chevrolet Silverado models, with GM estimating that around 1% of the recalled vehicles may actually have the defect.

Fault Origin and Fire Risk

To mitigate the risk, GM is advising vehicle owners to park affected trucks outside and away from buildings or other structures until repairs can be made. Owners will begin receiving notification letters starting July 28, with a second round of letters to follow once a permanent fix is available. Once notified, owners are advised to visit their nearest GM dealership to have the brake pressure sensor wire harness replaced at no cost

GM’s Response and Safety Advisory

GM has received 160 field reports related to the issue, including one incident of fire. However, the automaker has not reported any injuries or accidents linked to the defect. This recall is a precautionary step as GM continues to prioritize customer safety and vehicle reliability. Drivers concerned about their vehicle’s inclusion in the recall can check their VIN on the NHTSA or GM recall website.
