Ford has reportedly issued a recall that could affect over a million cars. According to The Associated Press, Ford is recalling over one million vehicles in the USA due to a software glitch that could cause the rearview camera to malfunction, potentially increasing the risk of an accident.

The issue, which Ford disclosed to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) earlier this month, may result in the rearview camera image freezing, delaying, or failing to display when the vehicle is shifted into reverse.

To resolve the issue, Ford will offer a fix either through a dealership or an “over-the-air” software update at a later date. A preliminary safety risk notification will be mailed to affected owners on June 16, followed by a second letter once the update becomes available, which is expected in the third quarter of 2025.

A total of 1,075,299 Ford vehicles have been affected by this recall. These include the following models along with the year on which they were manufactured.

  • 2021-2024 Bronco
  • 2021-2024 Edge
  • 2023-2024 Escape
  • 2021-2024 F-150
  • 2023-2024 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600
  • 2022-2024 Expedition
  • 2022-2025 Transit
  • 2021-2023 Mach-E
  • 2024 Ranger
  • 2024 Mustang
  • 2021-2023 Lincoln Nautilus
  • 2022-2024 Navigator
  • 2023-2024 Corsair

Affected customers can contact Ford customer service for more information on this recall. Owners may also call the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline or report to the official NHTSA website.

In April, a Ford engineering team successfully replicated the malfunction in a vehicle and traced the issue to specific software versions. The affected software, which functions as the operating system for the vehicle’s dashboard—managing the infotainment system, apps, map displays, and more—will be updated by dealers via an over-the-air (OTA) update.

Owner notification letters outlining the safety risk are scheduled to be mailed by June 16, with a second letter to follow once the fix becomes available later this year.

Ford other recent recalls

Also in April, Ford issued two additional recalls in the U.S. related to rearview camera problems, affecting around 289,000 vehicles. In both cases, Ford plans to replace the faulty cameras.

Back in November, the NHTSA announced that Ford had agreed to pay a $165 million civil penalty after an investigation concluded that the company delayed the recall of vehicles with defective rearview cameras.

The NHTSA initially launched its investigation in August 2021, following Ford’s 2020 recall of approximately 620,000 vehicles for rear camera defects. The recall was later expanded in 2022, with an additional 24,000 vehicles added in March.
