Recalls are something that up until this point have been regulated in terms of public information, and that means that a consumer would have to struggle to get reliable information on recalls. Usually, customers are intimated directly and the media is furnished with as little as information as possible. The biggest news out of the introductory speech at the Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers’ (SIAM) 2017 annual convention was the launch of a voluntary recall tab on SIAM’s homepage. Which means that you can check up on the recall history of your vehicle, or check on a vehicle you are looking to buy.
The page that was launched at the behest of Ministry of Heavy Industry, and was launched by Mr. Anant Geete. The page will now have all recalls issued within the industry ( especially members of SIAM) since 2012. Consumers will get information like Manufacturer’s Name, Voluntary Recall Date Model, Variant of target Recall Vehicles, Manufacture dates and Description of the Potential Defect. This will not only allow vehicle owners to assess whether they fall under the recall range and have not been contacted or have missed out on a previous recall. Additionally, customers looking to buy new vehicles can research on the recall history of the model they are interested in, before making a decision.
This Recall page can be accessed through the SIAM India homepage under the technical regulations tab and has been mandated for all manufacturers under the SIAM blanket. Most popular names would include, Maruti Suzuki, BMW, Force India, Honda, Hyundai, Mahindra, Triumph, Mercedes-Benz India, Ford and the VW group.
