The 160 cc segment hits the sweet spot as it sits above the commuter category while providing decent performance at an affordable cost. Hero Motocorp introduced the Xtreme 160R 4V last year, and shortly after its first anniversary, the company released an updated version. The 2024 Xtreme 160R 4V is now being compared to the well-liked and sporty TVS Apache RTR 160 4V.

The Xtreme 160 4V is only available in the Pro variant and weighs 145 kg, making it the lightest motorcycle in the segment. The Xtreme has the most accessible saddle with a height of 795 mm. The Apache RTR 160 4V, on the other hand, is only 1 kg heavier than the Xtreme 160 cc 4V. The TVS motorcycle has an 800 mm seat height. It is based on a 1357 mm wheelbase, while the Xtreme 160 4V gets a 1333 mm wheelbase.

Both motorcycles feature a 4-valve engine; however, the Hero Xtreme has a 163.2 cc air-oil-cooled engine, whereas the Apache has a 159.7 cc oil-cooled engine. The Xtreme delivers 16.6 bhp at 8500 rpm and is paired with a 5-speed gearbox. In contrast, the TVS Apache, despite its smaller engine capacity, generates 17.3 bhp at 9250 rpm. The Apache is as the first bike in its class to offer multiple riding modes. In Urban and Rain modes, it produces 15.4 bhp at 8600 rpm, while the Sport mode allows it to achieve the full 17.3 bhp.

The Xtreme 160 4V comes standard with disc brakes — 276 mm in front and 220 mm in the rear. It is also equipped with 37 mm KYB USD front forks and a 7-step adjustable mono-shock rear suspension. It rides on 17-inch wheels with a 100/80 front section and 130/70 section at the rear.

The Apache RTR 160 4V is available in both all disc and rear drum brake combinations. It comes standard with a 270 mm front disc and either a 200 mm disc or a 130 mm drum at the rear based on the variant. It is equipped with regular telescopic front forks and a rear mono shock suspension. The TVS motorcycle comes with front and rear LED lights.

The Xtreme 160 4V continues to sport all LED lighting including front, rear and indicators. Hero has updated the LCD instrument cluster with a brightness function. This makes it a lot more readable especially under direct sunlight. The new function added is the Drag Timer which has two modes and records both 0-60 kmph acceleration and quarter-mile timing. The motorcycle now gets a dual-channel ABS. Apart from this Hero has also introduced a new paint scheme, Kevlar Brown.

The Apache RTR 160 4V gets an LCD instrument cluster with smart features like turn-by-turn navigation, call and SMS alert, lean angle mode and race telemetry. The Apache is available in both single and dual-channel ABS based on the trim.

The Hero Xtreme 160 4V is available in only a single variant, the Pro, which comes in two trims. The standard is Rs 1.38 lakh while the Kevlar Brown costs Rs 1.39 lakh, ex-showroom. The Apache RTR 160 4V offers six trims starting from Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 1.39 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi.
