Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024, leaves behind a legacy that shaped modern India in profound and enduring ways. A statesman, economist, and compassionate leader, he epitomized the power of humility, intellect, and steadfast purpose.
As the architect of India’s economic reforms, in 1991, he transformed a nation on the brink of economic collapse into a thriving global powerhouse. His policies liberalized India’s economy, opening its doors to global markets while uplifting millions from poverty—a feat that altered the trajectory of Indian society and its
aspirations. As Finance Minister, his approach was marked by both precision and empathy, ensuring that economic progress was not detached from the realities of India’s citizens.
In May 2004, Dr Manmohan Singh became India’s first Sikh Prime Minister. Across two terms, his quiet yet resolute leadership led to remarkable milestones, including the landmark India-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement, which heralded India’s arrival as a global power. His tenure also underscored his commitment to equitable growth with initiatives such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act and the Right to Education Act.
Also, a few leaders have left as indelible a mark on India’s healthcare landscape as Dr. Manmohan Singh. His contributions were transformative, laying the foundation for a healthier and more equitable nation. As Finance Minister, his visionary policies, outlined in his 1995 Budget speech, laid the foundation for transformative change, including the reduction of import duties on life-saving medical equipment. By easing access to advanced medical technologies, he empowered institutions like Apollo Hospitals to bring world-class healthcare closer to the people.
Years later, as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh inaugurated Apollo’s Reach Hospitals—a pivotal step in expanding quality healthcare to rural regions. His words on that occasion captured his admiration for Apollo’s contributions and his belief in equitable access to healthcare. Dr. Singh’s enduring support for healthcare
reforms—whether through promoting public-private partnerships or reducing barriers for medical innovation—echoed his broader philosophy of inclusive growth. Dr. Prathap C Reddy, the pioneering founder chairman of Apollo Hospitals often described Dr. Singh as a leader who “not only enabled transformative policy changes but also inspired us to dream bigger for India.”
Beyond politics and economics, Dr. Singh embodied dignity and selflessness. He once said, “I am a small person entrusted with big responsibilities.” This humility, combined with his intellectual rigor and unwavering integrity, endeared him to those across the political and social spectrum. As we mourn his passing, we also
celebrate a life devoted to nation-building. His intellect, humility, and resolute dedication to the nation serve as a timeless reminder that leadership is about service, vision, and the courage to transform challenges into opportunities. As we reflect on his profound impact on India’s journey, we are inspired to carry forward
his ideals of progress, inclusivity, and unwavering commitment to the greater good.
