Sensex scaled a fresh high in July and successfully breached the 80,000 milestone on July 03, 2024. The investor sentiment was buoyed by positive sentiment globally and confidence in the local economy. What’s particularly fascination is the pace at which Sensex climbed the latest 10,000 points. It took the Benchmark Index just 138 days to rally to 80,000 from 70,000.
“80,000 reflects markets’ confidence on policy measures announced by the government as they indicate policy continuity in Modi 3.0,” said Trideep Bhattacharya, President & CIO-Equity at Edelweiss MF.
Before we move further, have you ever thought about what Sensex stands for? Well, Sensex is the abbreviated version of the Stock Exchange Sensitive Index.
Here’s a quick timeline of the journey that Sensex undertook from 1990 till date
In July 1990, the Sensex crossed the 1,000 level. The BSE Sensex started trading in 1986, with 1978-79 as the base year and 100 as the base value.
The BSE Sensex hit 10,000 on February 06, 2006, on strong FII buying and a booming global commodity market.
After that, the 30-stock index scaled the next 10,000 points and hit 20,000 in a little over a year on October 29, 2007, after FIIs poured money into blue-chip stocks along with local operators.
But seven and a half years later, the 20,000 milestone looked shorter in front of 30,000. Sensex scaled to a new high of 30,000 on March 04, 2015. This was achieved after the Reserve Bank of India cut the policy rate by 25 basis points (7.5% from 7.75%) under the liquidity adjustment facility. On that day, Nifty was somewhere around 9,000.
Sensex climbs 40,000 and races to 50,000
From 30,000, Sensex took around four years to reach 40,000. On May 23, 2019, the Index breached this key milestone. On January 21, 2021, Sensex reached the next pitstop and scaled 50,000 in just 415 trading sessions.
Conquering 60,000 milestone
In the same year, it took Sensex just eight more months to reach the 60,000 milestone in September. 2021. Banking stocks played a major role along with metals and IT stocks in this rally.

However, the next 10,000-point milestone entailed a slightly longer wait, more than a year. Finally, the BSE Sensex rose to a level of 70,000 on December 11, 2023, and rallied to 80,000 in just 138 days on July 3, 2024.
