Mumbai Rains Update Live: Maharashtra on ‘alert mode’ amid torrential downpour; local trains, metro suspended

The Southwest Monsoon has advanced to Mumbai today, 26th May 2025, against the normal date of advancement, 11th June. Thus, the monsoon has arrived in Mumbai 16 days earlier than usual.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday described the intense rainfall in Baramati, Indapur, and Daund tehsils as “unprecedented” for the month of May, noting that some areas received 13 inches of rain within a few hours which is almost the full season’s average.

There has been a reported two-hour closure of the Pune-Solapur highway. As Mumbai rains wreak havoc in the city, NDRF deployed forces for rescue and relief operations in Baramati and Indapur where homes were flooded and residents were left stranded.

As rains continue to drown Maharashtra in its grips, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar have rallied the following relief efforts:

1. 24/7 disaster management operations

2. Baramati flood inspection

Mumbai Police has advised residents to avoid low-lying areas in coastal regions. Kerala also issued a warning for fishermen.

Mumbai, Pune, Sholapur, Kalaburagi, Mahbubnagar, Kavali, Agartala, Golpara are affected severely for torrential rains across Maharashtra.

Airlines IndiGo and Air India issued their travel advisories for passengers’ arrival and departure at the Mumbai Airport. They advised people to take in consideration traffic clogging. Air India advised that rain and thunderstorms might impact flight operations resulting in delays or diversions.

Heavy rain lashes parts of the city, Andheri Subway waterlogged after heavy showers.

Maharashtra’s Raigad district early Monday experienced significant rainfall across its talukas till 8:00 am. The district’s overall precipitation record has crossed 2200 mm showing intense monsoonal activity.

A wall collapse triggered by heavy rainfall in Karnataka’s Belagavi on Monday led to the tragic death of a three-year-old girl. Another child, a four-year-old girl, sustained injuries in the incident.

Mumbai Suburban from Churchgate to Dahanu Road is running normally as of 0900 hours and Harbour Line resumes normal connectivity between Mahim and Goregaon.

Dadar Hindmata and Navi Mumbai reports heavy rainfall since morning. Roads are waterlogged and residents wait for rains to stop. As daily life comes to a halt, IMD yellow-alert dominates Maharashtra regions.

Set to arrive between June 10 and 15, Pune received heavy showers last night, May 25. However, parts near Baner saw sunshine earlier today. This 15-day advance is rather unusual for residents, as per sources.

The BMC issued a high-tide warning twice during Mumbai rains. The timings mentioned below:

At 11:24 hrs – 4.75mtr and 23:09 hrs – 4.17mtr

Heavy traffic was observed between the 15 km Kandivali to Santa Cruz stretch. Mumbai rains halt buses, trucks and cars, as they take more than an hour to cover this distance.

Continuous Mumbai rains since morning has led to waterlogging in Lalbaug area in South Mumbai. Cars unable to pass as trucks are stuck midway.

Continuous heavy rains has led to flooding on roads near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai. Almost knee-dep water as resident struggle with their daily commute.

All districts but, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha, are under a red-alert. IMD issued a fishermen warning citing that Kerala may receive more than 20 cm rainfall in 24 hours and waves reaching 4m. Gusty winds of more than 40 kmph are expected. It is advised that small vessels should not ply and nearshore recreation activities should be totally suspended as erosion/wave surges are possible.

As per media reports, the mumbai rain waterlogging has reached the railway tracks. Delays are experienced in sub-urban regions and are currently 5-10 minutes behind schedule going towards Kalyan. Similar delays on the western line.

Moderate spell of rainfall likely to continue over Kerala, coastal Maharashtra including Mumbai, south Jharkhand, north Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya during next 3 hours. IMD shares development of winds.

SpiceJet Airlines has issued a travel advisory for passengers using the Mumbai Airport. Due to Mumbai rains, departures/arrivals may get affected.

Visuals from Waynad surface on social media as more than 10 districts are under an IMD red-alert. Heavy rains and gusty winds are seen. Trees sway and vehicles drives on rain-drenched roads.

Visuals from waterlogged JJ Flyover in Mumbai appear as cabs and private cars drive by. More than ankle deep water seen.

Two major regions in Chennai are set to receive extremely heavy rain, thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and strong surface winds. IMD issues red-alert for Coimbatore and Nilgiris.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai during next 3-4 hours. Take precautions while moving out.

Uttar Kannada, Shimoga, Udupi, Dakshin Kannada and Kodagu are under an IMD red-alert with heavy rainnfall and gusty wind predictions.

IMD predicts an 80% chance of rainfall in Delhi today. As showers bring respite from heat, the visibility and AQI improves to satisfactory. However, a thunder storm and lightning is in the predictions.

Kerala received heavy showers, thunderstorms and lightning as monsoon reaches eight days early. This has happened only 16 years ago in 2009. IMD raised red-alert for regions in Kerala and warned fishermen about not venturing out to much into the sea.
