On the back of high rural penetration, the country?s second largest motorcycle manufacturer, Bajaj Auto, has posted its highest monthly motorcycle sales of 2.89 lakh units in August, growing 59% over August 2009 when the company sold 1.82 lakh units. Bajaj has recorded the highest monthly sales for Pulsar and Discover during the month.
Bajaj?s total motorcycle sales stood at 2,89,176 units in August. The three-wheeler sales were also the highest in August, growing 34% to 40,188 units from 30,021 units sold in the same month last year. The company?s exports for two and three-wheelers during the month jumped 31% at 98,578 units, against 75,164 units in the same month in 2009.
Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland also reported a 56% jump in commercial vehicle sales, at 7,480 units in August from 4,784 units it sold in the year-ago period. Domestic sales stood at 6,705 units in August as against 4,233 units in the same month last year, an increase of over 58%. The company?s exports jumped 40% to 775 units during the month from 551 units in the corresponding period of the last fiscal.
Utility major Mahindra & Mahindra also saw its sales surge during the month with total domestic sales growing 27% to 27,275 units against 21,410 units in August 2009. Exports during the period grew 62% to 1,228 units against 653 units in the same month last year. The domestic sales for the passenger UV range of products, including the Bolero, Scorpio and Xylo, stood at 12,994 units during August, up 14% from 11,443 units during August 2009.
