Parliament Winter Session Highlights: Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day amid ruckus by Opposition

The Lok Sabha resumed at 12 pm on Monday and got immediately adjourned till Wednesday 11 am by chair Sandhya Ray.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on the first day of the Winter Session amid ruckus as the Opposition demanded discussion on Adani bribery charges.

Opposition MPs, who are members of the Joint Committee of Parliament (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday.

After the meeting, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, “We met the Lok Sabha Speaker and he listened to our issues in which we had 2-3 prominent representatives. The tour was cancelled in the middle, the tour was conducted without quorum in two places and the remaining places are yet to be visited, they should be completed, the discussion on the ministry’s report is still pending and it should be completed, several members of Waqf Board are yet to come before the JPC, this should be done. A JPC report be prepared after listening to all the arguments. You cannot write and submit a JPC report overnight by forcefully holding hands. The Speaker listened to all these things very politely and assured us that we would extend the time limit for submitting our report to the JPC…”

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 11.45 am amid demands by the opposition for discussion on the Adani issue.

Right after the Winter Session began, Lok Sabha was adjourned till 12 pm after Speaker Om Birla read out obituary references.

The Winter Session of the Parliament commenced on Monday amid sloganeering from the Opposition side. The session will continue till December 20.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a swipe at the Opposition saying that some resort to “hooliganism” after being rejected by people in elections.

“The public has to reject them (Opposition) again and again…It is a condition of democracy that we respect the feelings of the people and work hard day and night to live up to their hopes and expectations,” PM Modi said.

“Some of the opposition members behave very responsibly. They also wish that work should be done smoothly in the House. Those who have been continuously rejected by the public, ignore the words of their colleagues, disrespect their feelings and disrespect the feelings of democracy,” he added.

While addressing the media on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at the opposition. “Opposition blinded by self-centered agenda,” he said. Hitting out at the opposition, he said, “Aim of some of the members is only to stall the House proceedings”.

While addressing the media ahead of the Parliament Winter Session, PM Modi said, “Some people who have been rejected by the people are constantly trying to control the Parliament through hooliganism by a handful of people. The people of the country count all their actions and when the time comes, they also punish them. But the most painful thing is that the new parliamentarians bring new ideas, new energy and they do not belong to any one party but to all parties. Some people usurp their rights and they do not even get the opportunity to speak in the House…But those who have been continuously rejected by the people 80-90 times do not allow discussions to take place in the Parliament. They neither respect the spirit of democracy nor do they understand the importance of people’s aspirations. They have no responsibility towards them, they are unable to understand them and the result is that they never live up to the expectations of the people.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ahead of parliament session, highlighted the significance of the ongoing session, marking the beginning of the 75th year of India‘s Constitution. “This session is special, and tomorrow in Samvidhan Sadan, we will celebrate this milestone,” Modi said, reflecting on the importance of the Constitution as India prepares for 2025.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Parliament for the winter session, he addressed the public, thanking voters for the massive win in the Maharashtra Assembly polls. He further attacked the Congress party, claiming that voters had rejected power-hungry parties and urging the people to continue holding such parties accountable, as they have lost dozens of elections.

PM Modi also slammed certain parties for attempting to disrupt parliamentary proceedings.

Ahead of the commencement of the Winter Session, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla took to X and said, “The winter session of Parliament begins today. I am confident that during the session, issues of public interest will be reflected through positive dialogue and cooperation of all honourable members. This will not only increase the efficiency of the House, but will also pave the way for our contribution to nation building. I am hopeful that all honourable members will ensure effective functioning in the House by making good use of parliamentary procedures.”

After an all-party meeting on Sunday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “The government is ready to discuss any topic. Our only request is that the House should run well and there should be no ruckus. Every member wants to participate in the discussion but the House should run well. To run the winter session well, everyone’s cooperation is needed and everyone’s participation is necessary.”

To discuss the strategy of the opposition, the leaders of the INDIA bloc are likely to meet today in the Parliament House.

Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to preside over the meeting to decide the strategy, according to ANI sources.

With the Parliament Winter Session set to begin today, the Opposition is likely to corner the Centre over the Manipur violence and the Adani bribery case issues. The Opposition has also demanded a discussion on the air pollution in the Rajya Sabha.

There will be no sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on November 26, Tuesday. The Parliament will commemorate the ‘Constitution day’ tomorrow.

The Parliament session is set to kickstart today (Monday), with various issues slated to be discussed, including the Waqf Act (Amendment) Bill.

Other bills that are listed for introduction, consideration and passing include the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, the Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, the Bills of Lading Bill, the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, the Railways (Amendment) Bill, the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, and the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Bill.

The Boilers Bill, the Rashtriya Sahkari Vishwavidyalaya Bill, the Punjab Courts (Amendment) Bill, the Merchant Shipping Bill, the Coastal Shipping Bill, and the Indian Ports Bill, are also included in the list. (ANI)
