An adjournment motion in parliament is a parliamentary procedure used by members to draw attention to a specific issue considered urgent and important. It is typically used to interrupt the normal business of the house to discuss a matter of public importance that requires immediate attention.
When an adjournment motion is accepted and moved by a member, it leads to the suspension of the current business of the house so that the issue can be debated. The debate usually takes place at the end of the day’s agenda or during a specific time allocated for such motions. After the debate, the house may either take a decision on the issue or refer it to the concerned authorities for further action.
In many parliamentary systems, an adjournment motion requires the support of a certain number of members to be accepted for discussion, ensuring that only matters of significant public concern are considered under this procedure.
