The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, is hoping for a strong performance in the general election. Before they departed from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2009, the BJD and BJP were discussing creating a pre-election partnership. Paika community and slum dwellers hold the key in the prestigious Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha constituency from where former IAS officer and sitting BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi and BJD candidate Manmath Routray are seeking votes claiming that their party has done a lot of development work in the area. Yasir Nawaz, carrying the banner for the Indian National Congress is the other prominent contender.
The Paika community has a sizable number of voters in Khurda, Begunia and Jatni assembly segments under the Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha constituency.
Paika were originally a class of military retainers recruited since the 16th century by kings in Odisha from a variety of social groups to render martial services in return for hereditary rent-free land and titles.
Pinaki Misra of the BJD won the Puri constituency in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, securing 538321 votes while 526607 votes were polled in favour of Dr Sambit Patra of the BJP. Pinaki Misra won with a massive margin of 11714.
Puri constituency is one of the 21 Lok Sabha/Parliamentary constituencies in Odisha. Going by past elections, Puri, where the famous Lord Jagannath temple is situated, has never been an easy playing field for the BJP. It is the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) that has ruled the city historically. The party has won the seat in five consecutive Lok Sabha elections. The BJD has won Puri seats in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014.
In Cuttack, the Biju Janata Dal has an advantage. However, the incumbent party is on unstable ground this time, owing primarily to the BJP‘s rise in Odisha. Cuttack is no exception, with the saffron party putting up a stiff fight against the BJD.
Bhartruhari Mahtab, a six-time MP, won the Cuttack constituency for the Biju Janata Dal in 2019, but moved to the Bharatiya Janata Party this year. Mahtab has been given the BJP ticket for the sixth phase of the ongoing general elections, which were conducted on May 25, while Santrupt Mishra of the BJD is the other main contender.
Cuttack Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 21 Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies in Odisha. The total number of voters at Cuttack parliamentary seat is approximately 1518996 as per 2019 Lok Sabha Election stats. Voter turnout at Cuttack parliamentary seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election was 69.81.
The Sambalpur Lok Sabha constituency in Odisha is preparing for a high-profile struggle after the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) fielded its organizational secretary and sitting Jajpur MLA, Pranab Prakash Das popularly known as Bobby, against Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the BJP‘s choice for the position.
After a ten-year break, two political heavyweights, Jual Oram of the BJP and Dilip Tirkey of the BJD, are set to square off in the Sundargarh Lok Sabha Seat.
Initial indications indicate a close contest between the BJP and BJD as the Odisha Lok Sabha Election counting process is underway.
