Odisha Legislative Assembly Election Results 2024: The BJP on Tuesday won the election in Odisha, taking over from the BJD, which had been in power for 24 years. According to the data provided by the Election Commission of India, the BJP secured 78 out of 147 seats in the Odisha Assembly. The BJD won 51 seats. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who leads the BJD, won in Hinjili but lost in Kantabanji. The Congress, on the other hand, got 14 seats, while the CPI(M) got one. Independents won three seats. In 2019, the BJD had won 113 seats, BJP bagged 23, and Congress had won 9.
Basking in victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday took to platform X and wrote, “Thank you Odisha! It’s a resounding victory for good governance and celebrating Odisha’s unique culture. BJP will leave no stone unturned in fulfilling the dreams of people and taking Odisha to new heights of progress.”

The spotlight is on Sambalpur, where Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is competing against the BJD’s organizational secretary, Pranab Prakash Das. Days before the last phase of the election, Union Home Minister Amit Shah predicted that the BJP will win in Odisha and Andhra. “We will surely cross 400 seats. We will also form governments in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh,” Shah had said.
A few weeks ago President and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik declared that, if re-elected, his government would offer free electricity to the state. During a public rally in Kendrapara, Patnaik said, “There will be no electricity bill from July as the BJD government will provide free electricity. Bless BJD’s MP and MLA candidates and vote for the conch symbol.”
