Lakhimpur Kheri Violence: The Lakhimpur Kheri violence in Uttar Pradesh in which eight people were killed yesterday has intensified the political activities in the poll bound state with opposition Congress and Samajwadi Party going all out to cash on the opportunity. On the other hand, the BJP government was quick to announce compensation and order a judicial probe into the matter. Notably, four farmers were allegedly run over and four people in a convoy of BJP workers were lynched yesterday as violence erupted during a farmers’ protest in Lakhimpur Kheri district.
Two FIRs have been registered in connection with Sunday’s violence that broke out after two SUVs allegedly ran over a group of anti-farm law protesters who were demonstrating against a visit of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. Political leaders trying to visit the area including Priyanka Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav were detained en route while permission to visit the area was not granted to Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi. The RSS-affiliated farmer union BKS today said people from various political parties, and not farmers, were behind it. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday attacked BJP governments at the Centre and Uttar Pradesh over the death of farmers during a protest , claiming that “autocracy” prevails in the country and “killing Raj” is going on in that state.
