J&K Assembly Elections 2024 phase 3 Polling Highlights: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections wrapped up on Tuesday, with voting completed for the final 40 seats in the third and largest phase of polling. By 5 pm, a voter turnout of 65.48% was recorded. Udhampur district had the highest turnout at 72.91%, while Baramulla witnessed the lowest at 55.73%. Unlike the first two phases, the majority of seats in this phase — 24 out of 40 — were in the Jammu division, with 16 in Kashmir. The election results will be announced on October 8.

At least 415 candidates from various parties and independent candidates, including former deputy chief ministers Tara Chand (Congress) and Muzaffar Hussain Baig, are in the fray in the third phase. Among the other key candidates are Sajad Lone, contesting from both – Handwara and Kupwara. A total of 5,060 polling stations have been set up across the seven districts, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, and Jammu.

Ruldu Ram’s joy was immeasurable as he cast his vote for the first time at the age of 90, after nearly eight decades of living in India. He was one of many West Pakistan refugees in the border town of R S Pura who finally exercised their voting rights in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections.

“I voted for the first time. I was not entitled to vote before. We came from West Pakistan in 1947,” he said.
