Jammu Kashmir Election Results 2024 Highlights: NC-Congress alliance dominates, BJP faces setback in Kashmir

The National Conference and Congress have agreed on a seat-sharing arrangement, with the National Conference contesting 51 seats and Congress contesting 32 seats. Pura Jammu South, Mir Iqbal (Congress) from Baramulla, Nizamuddin Bhat (Congress) from Bandipora, Javid Hussain Beigh (NC) from Baramulla, Nasir Aslam Wani (NC) from Kupwara, Ahsan Pardesi (NC) from Lal Chowk and Mushtaq Guroo (NC) from Chanapora.

The stakes are significant for all major political parties involved, but they are particularly elevated for the Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJP asserts that the Centre’s 2019 decision to revoke Article 370 has initiated a new era of development and peace in the Kashmir Valley. The Key BJP Candidates from J&K include Ravinder Raina from Nowshera, Hilal Ahmad Wani from Chhanpora, Naseer Ahmad Lone from Bandipora, Dr Narinder Singh Raina from RS Pora Jammu South, Pawan Gupta from Udhampur West and Balwant Singh Mankotia from Chenani.

PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti has chosen not to participate in the upcoming elections, stating that competing under the current Union Territory framework would not help her achieve her party’s objectives, even if she were to become Chief Minister. Instead, the party is focusing on her daughter, Iltija Mufti, to secure the Srigufwara-Bijbehara Assembly seat, a constituency that has been a stronghold for the PDP since 1996. Some of the other key candidates include Fayaz Ahmad Mir from Kupwara, Mohd Amin Dar from Kulgam, Narendra Sharma from RS Pora, Ab Rehman Veeri from Anantnag East, Mohammad Rafiq Rather from Baramulla, Irfan Ali Lone from Sopore, Mohammad Iqbal Trumboo from Chanapora and Bashir Ahmed Mir from Ganderbal.

The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir took place over seven days in November and December 2008. This election followed the collapse of the previous government, which was a coalition between the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) after the PDP withdrew its support. Following the elections, the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (NC) formed a coalition with the Congress party, leading to Omar Abdullah becoming the youngest Chief Minister in the state’s history at the age of 38.

Ahead of the vote counting in Jammu and Kashmir, Ravinder Raina, the J-K BJP chief and candidate for the Nowshera Assembly seat, expressed strong confidence in the party’s success in the Union Territory, predicting that they would secure 30 to 35 seats. The vote counting for the assembly elections is set to begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Raina also performed a hawan for the the party’s success.

In 2014, Jammu and Kashmir held elections for 87 seats over five phases from November 25 to December 20. Despite calls for a boycott from hardline regional parties, voter turnout reached 65%. At the time, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his party, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, ended their alliance with the Indian National Congress. This led to an unexpected coalition government, with the Bharatiya Janata Party aligning with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Following Abdullah’s resignation, President’s rule was briefly imposed until the BJP and PDP agreed on a chief minister. On March 1, 2015, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was sworn in as chief minister. After Sayeed’s death on January 7, 2016, the state returned to governor’s rule for a short period before Mehbooba Mufti of the PDP became the new chief minister.

In 2019, the Indian government revoked Article 370, which had granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. As a result, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act was passed, turning the state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, and this came into effect from October 31, 2019. This change also allowed Hindu refugees living in Jammu, who had been displaced from Pakistan during Partition in 1947, to participate in state elections.

Ravinder Raina, the head of the Bharatiya Janata Party‘s Jammu and Kashmir unit, is contesting from the crucial Nowshera seat in Rajouri district, a position he previously secured in 2014. This time, he faces a formidable opponent in JKNC’s Surinder Choudhary, a former Legislative Council member. Choudhary is also receiving support from the Congress party, which has allied with the National Conference, led by Farooq Abdullah, for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections.

Ravinder Raina, the President of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir and the party’s candidate for the Nowshera Assembly seat, conducted a Hawan ceremony prior to the vote counting for the J&K Assembly elections.

Omar Abdullah, National Congress Vice President is running in the 2024 assembly elections from two seats in Central Kashmir: Budgam and Ganderbal. Ganderbal is considered a strong area for the National Conference, as it has been represented by three generations of the Abdullah family. Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the party’s founder, won the seat in 1977, followed by his son Farooq Abdullah, who won in 1983, 1987, and 1996. Omar Abdullah too, was elected from Ganderbal in 2008. In Budgam, Abdullah is completing against seven other candidates, including Aga Syed Ahmad Moosvi from the Awami National Conference and Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi from the PDP.

The Key Constituencies include Ganderbal, Budgam, Chhanpora, Nowshera, Srigufwara-Brijbehara, and Rajouri district. This is the first assembly election since the special status of Jammu & Kashmir was revoked, which means its statehood was taken away, and then a martial curfew was imposed in 2019.

Security has been beefed up at the counting centers in Srinagar, ahead of the counting of votes which will begin at 8:00 AM today.

Other prominent candidates include former Jammu and Kashmir ministers Usman Majid (Bandipora), Raman Bhalla (R S Pura), Taj Mohiuddin (Uri), Nazir Ahmad Khan (Gurez), Ghulam Hassan Mir (Gulmarg), Basharat Bukhari (Wagoora-Kreeri), Imran Ansari (Pattan), and Choudhary Lal Singh (Basohli).

The results for each constituency will be released as soon as the counting process concludes. India uses a first-past-the-post electoral system, which means that the candidate receiving the most votes in a constituency is declared the winner. By midday, initial trends are expected to emerge, although a clearer understanding of the results will likely take shape later in the day.

The counting process will start by first counting postal ballots, which are designated for specific groups, such as individuals with disabilities, security personnel, and certain government employees in essential services. After that, votes cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be counted.

The Election Commission of India will begin the counting of votes at 8:00 am today. Election officials and representatives from various political parties began to arrive at the counting centers by 5 a.m. By 6 a.m., poll officials are anticipated to receive their briefings and take their places at the designated counting tables.
