Haryana Election Results 2024 Highlights: PM Modi hails victory as BJP returns for historic third term, Congress says results ‘against ground reality’

All preparations, including security measures, are in place for the counting process is underway. Haryana’s Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal said that a three-tier security arrangement has been implemented at the counting venues to ensure a smooth and secure process. The fate of the candidates was sealed in the EVM boxes on October 5, the day of polling.

According to initial trends, TV channels are telecasting that the Congress has taken the lead while BJP is trailing. According to News18, the Congress is leading in 20 seats, while BJP in 10 seats. According to India Today, BJP and Congress are engaged in a neck-and-neck fight, leading in 10 seats each.

All eyes are on the Congress high command’s next move as the party is predicted to come back to power after a 10-year-long hiatus. Names doing the round are former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Dalit leader from Haryana AICC general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Kumari Selja. Randeep Surjewala, who is also the party general secretary and a Rajya Sabha member, is also one of the contenders.

A total of 11 candidates have reported cases related to crimes against women. Among these, 2 candidates have declared charges of rape (IPC Section 376). At least six candidathe tes have self-reported murder charges (IPC Section 302), and eight candidates have declared charges related to attempted murder (IPC Section 307), according to the report by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Haryana Election Watch.

Counting of postal ballots so far shows Congress taking lead. According to News18, based on preliminary trends, the Congress is leading in 5 seats and BJP in 2 seats in Haryana.

A total of 133 candidates have declared criminal charges against themselves, while 95 have disclosed serious criminal offenses. The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Haryana Election Watch reviewed the self-sworn affidavits of 1,028 out of 1,031 candidates running in the Haryana 2024 Assembly Elections.

Three candidates were not included in the analysis due to incomplete or improperly scanned affidavits. In comparison, during the 2019 Haryana Assembly Elections, 10% (117 candidates) of the 1,138 candidates analysed had declared criminal cases against themselves. Read full report here.

In the current Assembly, the ruling BJP has 41 MLAs, which includes the Adampur seat secured in the 2022 bypoll.

Congress holds 28 seats, while JJP has 6. Both the Haryana Lokhit Party and Indian National Lok Dal have one MLA each.

There are four Independent members, and nine seats are currently vacant. Seven of these vacancies resulted from representatives resigning to switch parties, while the Badshahpur seat became vacant following the death of Independent MLA Rakesh Daulatabad in May. The Mulana seat has been vacant since Congress member Varun Chaudhary was elected to the parliamentary seat in Ambala.

Counting of votes begins for the 90 Assembly seats in Haryana. Initial trends are expected to emerge soon after the ballot paper votes are tallied. The counting of electronic voting machine (EVM) votes will take place once the ballot paper count is complete. The results for the Haryana Assembly election will be up on the Election Commission of India website.

In the Haryana Assembly Election of 2014, the BJP was the clear winner, taking 47 seats with 33.3% of the votes. The INLD followed, winning 19 seats and receiving 24.2% of the vote share. The Congress (INC) managed to secure 15 seats, accounting for 20.7% of the votes. Other results included HJCBL with 2 seats (3.6%), IND winning 5 seats with 10.6%, and various smaller parties claiming 2 seats with a combined vote share of 7.6%.

In the 2019 Haryana elections, the BJP had won 40 seats, the Congress 31 and JJP 10. Since no single political party secured the majority, the BJP formed the government with the support of JJP while most Independents had also extended support. However, JJP’s post-poll tie-up with the BJP ended after the saffron party replaced Manohar Lal Khattar with Nayab Singh Saini as Chief Minister in March ahead of the Lok Sabha elections on June 4 this year.

In the 90-member Haryana Assembly, any winning party would need to cross the halfway mark, which is 45. So, to form government in the state, the political party will need to bag 45 seats and more.

– Dainik Bhaskar predicted that Congress would secure between 44 and 54 seats, while BJP would receive 15 to 29 seats.

– Republic Bharat-Matrize exit polls forecast Congress’s tally even higher, ranging from 55 to 62 seats, compared to the BJP’s 18 to 24.

– The Red Mike-Datansh exit poll estimated Congress at 50 to 55 seats and BJP at 20 to 25, while Dhruv Research placed Congress between 50 and 64 seats and BJP between 22 and 32.

– The Peoples’ Pulse exit poll predicted Congress would win 49 to 60 seats and BJP 20 to 32.

– Most exit polls suggested that INLD would perform better than JJP, with both parties potentially winning up to 10 seats.

Most exit polls have predicted a Congress win in Haryana. According to India Today – C Voter exit poll, Congress is predicted to bag 50-58 seats, while BJP likely to secure 20-28 seats. According to Axis My India, 53-65 seats is predicted to be won by Congress, while it predicted 18-28 seats for the Congress. The Times Now Exit Poll has predicted 50-64 seats for the Congress, while 22-32 seats for the BJP. Note: Exit polls are just predictions and final results will only be known after 8 AM today.

The results for the Haryana Assembly Elections 2024 will be available on the official website of the Election Commission of India (ECI) website. You can access it on https://results.eci.gov.in/. The result trends will start trickling in from 8 AM onwards. At first the votes of postal ballots will be counted. This will be followed by EVM votes.

The BJP had announced names for all the 90 seats in Haryana. The saffron party had chosen to go to polls independently this time. The Congress had announced candidates from 89 seats for the Haryana Assembly polls, while leaving one seat for the CPI(M) in the 90-member Haryana Assembly. The Bhiwani Assembly seat has been left for the CPI(M), an ally of the INDIA bloc. There are five candidates who have declared zero assets. Dr Parveen Kharkhoda who is contesting as a Yoga Thulasi Party candidate from the SC-reserved Kharkhauda constituency have declared assets of over Rs 8,000. The average assets per candidate contesting in this election are Rs 8.68 crores according to ADR report.

BJP candidate Captain Abhimanyu, contesting from the Narnaund constituency in Hisar district, is the wealthiest candidate contesing in the Haryana Assembly Election with declared assets worth over Rs 491 crore. Congress candidate Rohtas Singh contesting from Sohna constituency has declared assets worth over Rs 484 crore, and Independent candidate Savitri Jindal has assets valued at over Rs 270 crore, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat, running from the Julana constituency, has declared assets of Rs 3 crore.

Notable independent candidates include Savitri Jindal who is contesting from the Hisar seat, Ranjit Chautala, who is contesting from the Rania Assembly constituency, Chitra Sarwara, who is contesting from Ambala Cantonment constituency. Savitri Jindal, the country’s richest woman, serves as the chairperson of the O P Jindal Group, a prominent steel and power conglomerate. Her son, Naveen Jindal, is currently the BJP Member of Parliament representing Kurukshetra.

The key parties in the electoral contest in Haryana are the BJP, the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, INLD-BSP and JJP-Azad Samaj Party. Most seats in the state are likely to see a direct fight between the BJP and the Congress.

The Election Commission had postponed the date of polling for the Haryana Assembly elections to October 5 from October 1, citing a centuries-old festival of the Bishnoi community. Counting of votes for the Haryana elections was earlier scheduled for October 4, and it was later changed to October 8.
