Ratan Naval Tata Funeral, Last Rites Highlights: ‘It is indeed an end of era for India Inc’, says HUL CEO Rohit Jawa

At an event in Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah remarked on the passing of Ratan Tata, stating that he was a highly respected industrialist, not only in India but around the globe. Shah said that Tata assumed leadership of the Tata Group during a pivotal time, implementing essential changes that transformed its operations and various enterprises. Under his guidance, the group made significant contributions in fields such as education and cancer care. Ratan Tata’s legacy will continue to inspire those in the industry, he added.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das arrived at the NCPA ground to pay his last respects to industrialist Ratan Tata in Mumbai. More big names are expected to attend the funeral.

Ratan Tata, born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, served as the Chairman of the Ratan Tata Trust and the Dorabji Tata Trust, two of India‘s largest philanthropic organizations in the private sector. He held the position of Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company for the Tata Group, from 1991 until his retirement in 2012, after which he became Chairman Emeritus. In 2008, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressed her condolences on the passing of industrialist Ratan Tata, who died on Wednesday. She noted that his unwavering dedication to innovation, ethical business practices, and social responsibility transformed industries, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Sharad Pawar, Chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP), along with his daughter Supriya Sule, an MP, visited the NCPA lawns to pay their final respects to Ratan Tata.

Singer Diljit Dosanjh paused his concert in Germany to deliver a heartfelt tribute to veteran industrialist Ratan Tata. The Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons and noted philanthropist passed away on Wednesday night at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. A video of Diljit expressing his thoughts about Tata during the concert has since gained widespread attention on social media.

Suhel Seth shared that Ratan Tata always treated everyone with respect, never considering anyone lesser than himself. He recalled a conversation from many years ago at the Taj, where Tata emphasized the importance of supporting people with disabilities, leading the hotel to install elevators with braille. After the 26/11 attacks, Tata expressed deep sorrow for the families of those who lost their lives. Seth remarked that such individuals are rare today, highlighting Tata’s genuine nationalism that was never driven by jingoism.

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar was one of the first to visit Ratan Tata‘s home. Mukesh Ambani and others quickly made their way to the hospital upon learning of Tata’s passing. On Thursday morning, Tata’s remains were transported from the hospital in an ambulance, accompanied by police vehicles, and taken to his residence in Colaba.

Shah’s visit to Mumbai coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s departure for Laos to participate in the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits. In a statement, Shah expressed his profound sadness over the loss of the “legendary industrialist and true nationalist.”

Preparations are in progress at the NCPA in Nariman Point for Ratan Tata‘s remains, which have been kept there for public viewing before the final rites. Marine Drive has been closed beyond the Oberoi Hotel, as police have secured the area leading to the NCPA Lawns.

Ratan Tata‘s remains are open for public viewing today at the NCPA Lawns in Nariman Point, Mumbai. According to a statement from Tata Trust, the remains will begin their final journey at 4 PM. The public has been advised to enter the NCPA Lawns through Gate 3 and exit via Gate 2. Parking will not be available on the premises, as per the statement. At 4 PM, the remains will be transported to the Prayer Hall at the Worli Crematorium on Dr. E Moses Road for the final rites, PTI reported.

Ratan Tata‘s body was transported from his home to the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in South Mumbai in a hearse adorned with white flowers, where it will be available for public tributes. Before the hearse departed from Tata’s residence, situated just a few kilometers from the NCPA, the Mumbai Police band played a tune in his honor. As news of his passing circulated, people from various backgrounds began gathering outside his home early Thursday morning to pay their respects.

Ratan Tata’s cremation will be held at Worli Crematorium later in the day today. In a conversation with reporters, Shinde announced that Ratan Tata’s family has confirmed that his body will be on display at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in South Mumbai from 10 AM to 4 PM on Thursday, allowing the public to pay their respects.
