Chhattisgarh Election Result 2023 Live: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the 2023 Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, securing its biggest-ever win in the state. The BJP won 54 seats while the INC won 35. Gondvana Gantantra Party – GGP gathered just one seat. The BJP’s resounding victory marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Chhattisgarh. This decisive outcome underscores the BJP’s growing popularity and its ability to connect with voters on a multitude of issues, including economic development, social welfare, and governance. The BJP, which had previously been in power in Chhattisgarh for 15 years, had seen an abrupt end of rule in the 2018 Assembly elections. The Congress had in 2018 secured a sweeping victory with 68 seats, while the BJP was limited to 15 seats. This marked the Congress’s first electoral triumph and government formation in the state, achieving a resounding mandate.
The polling in the state was held in two phases on November 7 and then on November 17. The exit poll results which were out on November 30, clearly favored the Congress, with the majority of surveys placing the Bhupesh Baghel-led party in the lead. The Congress in its campaign started out strong and showed quite some confidence in retaining its power in the state. But then the BJP high command entered the arena. Many central leaders were seen visiting the state which then started creating a favourable atmosphere for them.

Despite the Congress’s emphasis on welfare schemes and anti-corruption measures during the Chhattisgarh campaign, the party’s downfall may be attributed to a combination of factors, including the Mahadev scam allegations, anti-incumbency, and internal conflicts. The Mahadev scam case, involving allegations of corruption in a state-run rice procurement scheme, cast a shadow over the Congress’s governance record. The party’s failure to effectively address these allegations likely alienated voters, particularly in rural areas where the scheme was widely implemented.
Furthermore, anti-incumbency played a significant role in the Congress‘s loss. After 15 years in power, the party’s performance was scrutinized and found wanting by voters. Issues such as unemployment, poor infrastructure, and inadequate healthcare were major concerns that the Congress failed to address effectively.
In a significant electoral shift, the BJP is on the verge of securing victories in three of the recently contested states, consolidating its power in a total of 12 states. Meanwhile, the Congress, the second-largest national party, faces a decline to three states as it loses Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
The BJP, currently holding power at the center, has a robust presence in Uttarakhand, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh. Additionally, it is set to reclaim Madhya Pradesh and wrest control of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh from the Congress following the latest vote count. The BJP also plays a crucial role in ruling coalitions in Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Sikkim.
On the other hand, the Congress is projected to retain power in three states independently – Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, and the emerging victory in Telangana. Despite being part of ruling coalitions in Bihar and Jharkhand, and an ally to the DMK in Tamil Nadu, the party is not formally included in the state government.
