Bypoll Results 2023 Highlights: The assembly by-election results for seven seats in six states — Jharkhand, Kerala, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal — declared on Friday gave the opposition INDIA bloc an upper hand against the BJP which bagged three seats and one each going to Congress, JMM, TMC and Samajwadi Party. The BJP retained the Bageshwar assembly seat in Uttarakhand and Dhanpur in Tripura and wrested Boxanagar assembly seat from CPI(M) in the northeastern state, where the INDIA alliance parties had joined hands, but lost the Dhupguri assembly seat in West Bengal to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Counting of votes began at 8 AM.

The bypolls were the first electoral test for the INDIA alliance of 28 parties formed recently to take on the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls next year. Of the seven seats where bypolls were held on September 5, three were earlier held by the BJP, and one each was with the Congress, SP, CPI(M) and JMM. In Kerala, the opposition Congress-UDF in Kerala retained the Puthuppally Assembly constituency as its candidate Chandy Oommen, son of late Congress stalwart Oommen Chandy, trounced ruling LDF candidate Jaick C Thomas.

Counting of votes begins for Tripura bypolls, CPI(M) boycotts after alleging rigging

The counting of votes for the bye-elections to the two assembly seats — Dhanpur and Boxanagar — in Tripura's Sepahijala district began at 8 am, news agency PTI reported. On September 5, an average voter turnout of 86.50 per cent was recorded in the two seats.

The counting is currently being held at the Sonamura Girls' School amid tight security.

However, alleging large-scale rigging during the polling and inaction by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the opposition CPI(M) is boycotting the counting of votes. The two seats are witnessing a one-on-one fight between the ruling BJP and the CPI(M) with the other two opposition parties, Tipra Motha and Congress, not fielding any candidates.

Sepahijala's District Magistrate Vishal Kumar told PTI that all steps have been taken to complete the counting smoothly and transparently. “Tight security arrangements have been made to ensure peace during the counting and after the counting,” he told the news agency. (PTI)
