Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Election Results 2024 Highlights: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) crossed the halfway mark of 31 in the northeastern state by winning 46 seats and is now all set to form the government for a second consecutive term. Chief Minister Pema Khandu is likely to continue in the CM office for a second term. Counting of votes in Arunachal Pradesh concluded on Sunday afternoon.

The counting started at 6 am across 24 district headquarters. The National People’s Party (NPP) came a distance second with victory on just five seats. The elections for both the assembly and Lok Sabha were conducted simultaneously in Arunachal Pradesh during the first phase on April 19. The state has 60 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats, with the ruling BJP securing victory in 10 assembly seats uncontested.

Arunachal Pradesh election results Live: What happened in 2019 assembly polls?

The 2019 Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections witnessed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) come to power with Pema Khandu being chosen as the Chief Minister of the northeastern state.

CM Khandu won unopposed from his family’s stronghold, Mukto constituency, which he had also won unopposed in the 2011 by-election after the death of his father and former CM Dorjee Khandu. He had won unopposed again in 2014.

The BJP won both the Lok Sabha seats and 41 assembly constituencies in the 2019 polls. The JD (U) had won seven assembly seats, the National People’s Party (NPP) five, Congress four and the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) one. Two Independent candidates had also emerged victorious.

Arunachal election results Live: Why was counting of votes preponed?

The counting day for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Assembly elections was preponed to June 2 (Sunday) from June 4 as the term of the two assemblies is set to end on June 2 and a new House has to be constituted by today.

The Assembly polls in the state took place simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls in its first and largest phase on April 19. The overall voter turnout was recorded at 82.95 per cent, higher than the 2019 Assembly elections.
