Jharkhand Election 2024 Highlights: Voter turnout at 12.71% as of 9 am, lowest in Bokaro district

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, exuding confidence in a “two-thirds” majority for the party in Jharkhand, stated on Wednesday that key issues such as infiltration and unemployment have resonated with the public. He added that for the first time, the BJP is set to form a government in Jharkhand on its own.

Speaking to ANI, he said, “We are going to form our government here with full majority. Our issues like infiltration, unemployment and corruption have reached the public…Adivasis have taken the resolve to change the government here. We are coming to power with a 2/3rd majority. BJP is going to form its government in Jharkhand on its own for the first time.”

BJP candidate from Chandankiyari, Amar Kumar Bauri, exuded confidence in the party’s victory ahead of the Jharkhand Assembly election results. After casting his vote in Bokaro, Bauri stated, “Counting will happen on November 23, but BJP will definitely win. People have chosen BJP for change and protection of ‘Maati, Beti, Roti’.”

The voter turnout in the second phase of the Jharkhand Assembly elections was recorded at 12.71% by 9 am, according to data from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Union Minister Anurag Thakur urged voters to “vote for wealth, culture and state security”.

Taking to his official handle on X, he said, “Voting for the second phase of Jharkhand Assembly elections is taking place today. I humbly request all the respected voters to vote for the wealth, culture and security of the state and motivate more and more people to participate in this festival of democracy.”

Chief secretary of Jharkhand, Alka Tiwari, cast her vote at booth number 373 in the Khijri assembly constituency in Ranchi earlier today.

In the second phase of voting, several key constituencies are in focus. These include Barhait, where Chief Minister Hemant Soren is facing off against BJP‘s Gamliyel Hembrom, and Dhanwar, where BJP’s Babulal Marandi, the first CM of Jharkhand, is up against JMM’s Nizam Uddin Ansari.

Additionally, CM Soren’s wife, Kalpana Soren, is contesting against BJP’s Muniya Devi in Gandey constituency, while BJP’s Sita Soren is vying for the Jamtara seat.

“We worked responsibly for governance, but the BJP was working at full force to crush us, and it was this effort that led to my imprisonment. I have no qualms about accepting jail time if I’ve done something wrong, but when I hadn’t, and still ended up in jail, I could not accept it. While in prison, I realized the true motive was to destabilize the government and weaken the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha,” said Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, while talking to The Indian Express

“It is the morning of hope for Jharkhand. Twenty five years of Jharkhand is going to complete. The people are going to choose a government which will rule for five years. There is an atmosphere to save ‘maati-beti-roti’. I am going to vote. We will get full majority, and form the government,” said BJP candidate from Chandankiyari Amar Kumar Bauri.

As Jharkhand votes in the second phase of the Assembly elections, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, also the leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), sits down with The Indian Express to discuss his election outlook, governance, BJP’s accusations, and his time in prison.

Hemant Soren expressed confidence in the election outcome, stating that his campaign focused on the achievements of his government over the past five years. He highlighted that while his party addressed key issues and development, the BJP’s strategy was focused on polarising the electorate.

“Not at all. Our election campaign was based on the last five years of our work. Every place we put this issue forward whereas the BJP worked only to polarise the electorate,” he said.

In a appeal to the people of Jharkhand, Chief Minister Hemant Soren has accused the BJP of neglecting the state’s rightful share of Rs 1.36 lakh crore in development funds.

Soren highlighted the lack of commitment from BJP leaders, stating, “Every big and small BJP leader came and went to campaign in Jharkhand, but no one has ever claimed our rights.” He criticised the Centre for withholding crucial funds that could have been utilised for new flyovers, schools, colleges, metro rail, and welfare schemes spanning education, health, tribal welfare, and social security.

Calling it a question of identity and development, the Chief Minister said, “This is our right, our children’s future, and the security of Jharkhandis. We will take our rights.”

Soren urged the people to hold the BJP accountable and ensure that the state’s due funds are used for the welfare of Jharkhandis.

BJP candidate from the Dhanbad Assembly constituency, Raj Sinha, expressed confidence in his party forming the government in the ongoing elections. Speaking about the voter turnout, he said, “As per the current trend and seeing the huge number of voters, it is clear that BJP is going to form its government in this election.”

Sinha also touched upon the issue of Bangladeshi infiltrators, stating, “We raised the issue of Bangladesh (infiltrators) because it is the truth, and the people need to know about it and its consequences.”

JMM MP Nalin Soren, after casting his vote early morning said, “I want to continue with my tradition of voting early. Whoever is elected as the MLA, I would like to urge them to carry on with this tradition. People will vote based on the issue of development. My government will remain in power.”

As the second phase of voting kicks off in Jharkhand, voters are seen lining up outside a polling booth in Silli. This crucial phase will determine the fate of prominent candidates, including Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana Soren (both JMM), as well as Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri (BJP). More than 500 candidates are contesting across 38 of the state’s 81 assembly seats.

As voting for second phase of Jharkhand Assembly commences today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called final phase of the “great festival of democracy” in Jharkhand. He urged all voters to participate enthusiastically and set a new voting record.

“Today is the second and last phase of the great festival of democracy in Jharkhand. I appeal to all the voters to participate in it enthusiastically and create a new record of voting. On this occasion, I specially congratulate all my young friends who are going to vote for the first time. Your each vote is the strength of the state,” he wrote in his post on X.

Voting begins across 38 seats in the second phase of the Jharkhand Assembly elections 2024. Over 1.23 crore voters, including 60.79 lakh women, decide the fate of 528 candidates in this crucial phase of polling.

Mock polling is being conducted at a polling booth in the Giridih Assembly constituency as part of preparations for the second and final phase of voting in the Jharkhand Assembly elections today.

A total of 38 constituencies across 12 districts are heading to the polls in this decisive phase.
