The Indian Railways will release a new timetable for its services on January 1, 2025, marking the 44th edition of the ‘Trains at a Glance’ (TAG). The current version of the timetable will remain in effect until December 31, 2024. The updated TAG, which was first introduced on October 1, 2024, is available both in print and on the official Indian Railways website.
Key Developments in Indian Railways for 2025
As part of its modernisation efforts, Indian Railways is set to introduce several major changes in 2025, including the launch of the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail (Vande Metro), the Amrit Bharat Express trains, and an ambitious expansion of its fleet with 136 Vande Bharat Express trains. These initiatives are aimed at improving passenger comfort, convenience, and efficiency.
The Ministry of Railways has already made significant strides to enhance services. In 2024, Indian Railways introduced 70 new services and 64 Vande Bharat trains, continuing its commitment to modernising the rail network.
Changes to the Timetable Release Process
Typically, the ‘Trains at a Glance’ (TAG) timetable is released by the Ministry of Railways by June 30 each year, with the updated timetable taking effect on July 1. However, this year, the release schedule has been altered, and the new timetable will come into effect on January 1, 2025. This change in procedure reflects the ongoing evolution of India’s railway system, as it adapts to growing demands and technological advancements.

Maha Kumbh Mela 2025
Looking ahead, Indian Railways is also preparing for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. To accommodate millions of pilgrims, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is working to ensure top-notch facilities and services. IRCTC plans to operate over 3,000 special fare trains during the event and is also providing accommodations for over 100,000 people.
A key feature of this initiative is the creation of the Maha Kumbh Gramme, a luxurious tent city located near Triveni Sangam, offering comfortable stays for pilgrims. Reservations for stays at Maha Kumbh Gramme will be available online from January 10 to February 28, 2025. The IRCTC website, along with the Mahakumbh App and official tourism department portals, will facilitate bookings, ensuring that pilgrims can secure their accommodations effortlessly.
With the introduction of a new timetable and exciting new services, 2025 promises to be a transformative year for Indian Railways. Whether it’s the launch of the Vande Bharat trains, the modernisation of services, or the preparations for the Maha Kumbh Mela, Indian Railways continues to evolve to meet the needs of millions of passengers across the country.
