Towering above the bustling streets of Kolkata, the Dakshineswar Skywalk offers a unique and elevated perspective of the city. This architectural marvel, inaugurated in 2018, has transformed the pilgrimage experience for devotees visiting the revered Dakshineswar Kali Temple. Stretching for 400 meters, the skywalk acts as a seamless bridge between the Dakshineswar railway station, metro station, and bus stand, leading devotees directly to the temple gates. No longer do they need to navigate the congested roads and chaotic traffic, a blessing for pilgrims of all ages and abilities.
But in November last year, the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) sought permission from the state government to clear and shift structural utilities, including parts of the Dakshineswar skywalk, for the proposed extension of the metro viaduct beyond Dakshineswar station, commissioned in 2021.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has rejected Kolkata Metro’s request for land which is required for the expansion of this metro line.
Dakshineswar Skywalk demolition
Addressing a press conference, Chief Minister Banerjee expressed her strong opposition to the demolition of the Dakshineswar skywalk, emphasizing its religious significance. She has vowed to protect it at any cost and refused to permit interference with the heritage structure.
She also expressed dismay at learning about the proposal through a recent news report rather than an official communication. She directed officials to promptly inform her of such matters in the future, underlining the importance of transparency and timely information.
Proposal Background and Metro Extension Need
The RVNL’s proposal comes in response to the Kolkata Metro‘s request for extending the viaduct to ensure adequate signal overlap. This extension aims to facilitate smoother train operations between Dum Dum and Dakshineswar, a crucial segment of the North-South metro line.
While asserting her commitment to preserving heritage, Banerjee expressed a willingness to cooperate with the railways. However, she made it clear that any attempt to dismantle historical structures will be vehemently resisted.
