G20 Summit 2023 Highlights: Happy to have welcomed US President Joe Biden, says PM Modi

G20 Special Secretary Muktesh Pardeshi has said that the G20 Summit will be beginning in a few hours. “Today was the day of arrival of state heads. A lot of presidents, prime ministers and ministers have arrived. And many will come throughout tonight. Tomorrow is a long and important day. Tomorrow's day will begin with a ceremonial welcome of the leaders. After that, the inaugural session will continue till lunch,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be hosting a working lunch after which there would be some free time when bilateral meetings may take place. This will be followed by commencement of the second session which will continue till the evening.

The White House in a statement said that US President Joe Biden, who is in India for the G20 Summit and held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, congratulated PM Modi and the scientists and engineers of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Chandrayaan-3’s success.

“President Biden congratulated Prime Minister Modi and the scientists and engineers of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Chandrayaan-3’s historic landing…as well as the successful launch of India’s first solar mission, Aditya-L1…,” the White House said.

US President Joe Biden who is in India for the G20 Summit tweeted, Hello, Delhi! It's great to be in India for this year's G20.” Earlier today, Biden held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This is Biden's first visit to India as the US President.

After US President Joe Biden arrived in India for the G20 Summit and held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the White House said that PM Modi welcomed Biden to India today, “reaffirming the close and enduring partnership between India and the US”.

“The leaders expressed their appreciation for the substantial progress underway to implement the ground breaking achievements of Prime Minister Modi’s historic, June 2023, visit to Washington,” the White House added.

The Delhi Police conducted a tear gas exercise in view of the G20 summit Delhi Police and BSF jointly conducted patrolling in the Yamuna Khadar area.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received US President Joe Biden at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg earlier today. The two had a bilateral meeting.

Premier of the People's Republic of China Li Qiang has arrived in Delhi for the G20 Summit. He was received by Union minister Gen (Retd) VK Singh.

Over 40 residents of the Gandhi Nagar area have offered to help the Delhi Police with maintaining the security at night during the G20 Summit. “We have agreed as we are already short of staff. We would be taking their help at pickets and night patrolling,” a senior police official said. The citizens have been briefed. They have been given specail t-shirts which will help the police to identify them.

Talking about the security measures put in place for the G20 Summit, Joy N Tirkey, DCP Northeast, said they started their preparation in August itself.. He added that starting today officials are boat patrolling in Yamuna as well.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak after his arrival in New Delhi to attend the G20 Summit today met with students and staff here at British Council in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to twitter (formerly X) to wish Spain's President Pedro Sánchez well after he tested positive for COVID-19 and will be skipping the G20 Summit because of it.
