Poppi, a Texas-based soda brand, has been subjected to a class-action lawsuit. From what it’s understood, a customer, named Kristin Cobbs, filed the lawsuit at the US District Court in San Francisco, claiming that the brand’s products aren’t as effective as their marketing efforts for bettering gut health.
Reportedly, Cobbs used to be a buyer of Poppi drinks based on their labels, which states that they are prebiotic sodas along with the tagline, “Be Gut Happy. Be Gut Healthy.” Upon researching, Cobbs found that Poppi drinks comprise roughly two grams worth of prebiotic agave inulin fiber, mentioning that the quantity isn’t enough for developing human health. Furthermore, Cobbs’ research mentioned two more points, them being the inadequacy of ingesting agave insulin worth 7.5 grams daily for three weeks in terms of prebiotic advantages and that increased consumption of Poppi drinks would result in more sugar intake. “We are on a mission to revolutionize soda for the next generation of soda drinkers, and we have diligently innovated to provide a tasting experience that millions of people have come to enjoy. We believe the lawsuit is baseless, and we will vigorously defend against these allegations,” Poppi stated, in response to Cobbs asking for monetary compensation for herself and other customers of the brand.
Seemingly, this isn’t the first time a brand has come in the spotlight over a lawsuit. Talking about other brands, Maggi, a Swiss food firm, got subjected to a lawsuit on account of claims that its products contain high amounts of lead, along with Patanjali, an Indian multinational company, for running misrepresentative advertisements with regard to its products. In 2023, Dabur International Ltd’s, an Indian multinational consumer goods company, three subsidiaries were subjected to lawsuits, across Canada and USA, over ovarian and uterine cancer being triggered by their hair-relaxer goods, with charges being dropped against two of them.
