The Indian box office clocked Rs 1,430 crore in July 2025, marking its highest monthly haul of the year so far. The surge in collections was led by two big-ticket releases, Hindi drama Saiyaara and the multi-lingual animated feature Mahavatar Narsimha, which together contributed over 45% of the month’s earnings, revealed Ormax Media report. The figures include projected revenues from films still running in theatres.
With this performance, the cumulative box office for the year now stands at Rs 7,175 crore, up 22% compared to the same period in 2024. On a pro rata basis, industry analysts expect 2025 to cross Rs 12,000 crore in annual gross collections, putting it on course to potentially surpass the all-time record of Rs 12,226 crore set in 2023.
‘Saiyaara’ and ‘Mahavatar Narsimha’ drive July surge
Leading the charts in July, Saiyaara emerged as the top-grossing film of the month with Rs 392 crore, making it the second-highest earner of the year after Chhaava. The strong performance cements the film’s status as one of the biggest Hindi hits of 2025.
Close behind was Mahavatar Narsimha, which grossed Rs 259 crore across languages. Significantly, the Hindi version accounted for nearly three-fourths of its domestic revenue, underlining the growing audience base for high-quality animated features in India.
Hollywood maintains presence in Top 10
Despite strong competition from Hindi and regional cinema, Hollywood releases continued to pull in Indian audiences. Three English-language titles—Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, and The Fantastic Four: The First Steps—secured places in the month’s Top 10 performers.
Overall, Hindi cinema dominated the July list, with five films in the Top 10, not counting the multi-lingual Mahavatar Narsimha. Industry experts note that the robust mix of domestic blockbusters and international franchises highlights the increasingly diversified appeal of the Indian box office, setting up the rest of the year for potentially record-breaking numbers.
