India’s domestic air passenger traffic grew by 5.3% in October 2024, reaching 1.36 crore passengers, up from 1.26 crore in the same month last year, according to the latest data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Leading the market, budget carrier IndiGo transported 86.4 lakh passengers, capturing a dominant 63.3% market share. It was followed by Air India and Vistara, which carried 26.48 lakh and 12.43 lakh passengers, respectively.
The passenger numbers for Air India include those flown by its budget arm, Air India Express, following the merger of its low-cost subsidiary AIX Connect with Air India Express on October 1, 2024. This merged entity now operates as Air India Express under the Air India brand.
The combined market share of Air India (including Air India Express) for October 2024 stood at 19.4%, while Vistara held 9.1% of the market. The Tata Group, which owns both Air India and Vistara, saw a combined total of 28.5% of the domestic passenger traffic in October.
Meanwhile, SpiceJet carried 3.35 lakh passengers, and Akasa Air transported 6.16 lakh, accounting for 2.4% and 5.4% of the domestic traffic, respectively, as per DGCA data.
In terms of on-time performance (OTP), IndiGo led the major carriers, with an OTP of 71.9% at the four major metro airports—Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. On the other hand, government-run Alliance Air recorded the lowest OTP at 54.4% among the six major airlines, as per the DGCA data.
