Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the Interim Budget 2024-25 in February in which she introduced three significant economic corridor programs aimed at boosting the transportation of energy, cement, and minerals. Additionally, she announced the extension of crucial rail infrastructure projects including Metro Rail and Namo Bharat to more cities. Sitharaman highlighted plans for converting around 40,000 Indian Railways bogies into Vande Bharat standard coaches. Furthermore, she outlined initiatives to expand Metro Rail and Namo Bharat networks across major urban centers.

Recent significant train accidents have underscored the urgent need for the Centre to prioritize passenger safety. The Interim Budget this year had already allocated funds for the high-speed bullet train project. There are chances that the Railway Budget today might allocate more funds for the development of high-speed rail corridors to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time between major cities. This initiative is part of the government’s long-term plan to modernize railway infrastructure.

There is no official confirmation regarding this but the railway budget is expected involve the introduction of more mechanized cleaning systems, enhanced waste management practices, and promoting cleanliness awareness among passengers.

Going by past statements and multiple media reports, the Railway Budget 2024-25 is anticipated to allocate significant funds towards enhancing safety measures such as track renewal, signaling upgrades, and the implementation of advanced safety technologies. In March 2020, Indian Railways ceased offering discounts on train fares for senior citizens, which included a 50% discount for female seniors and a 40% discount for male and transgender seniors. Consequently, seniors now pay full fares like all other passengers. There’s speculation among experts that the upcoming budget may bring relief in train fares for seniors, but uncertainties remain regarding fares on Vande Metro or Vande Bharat sleeper trains.

As of now, there is no proposal to increase passenger fares in the Indian Railway Budget 2024-25. The focus is on maintaining affordability while improving services and infrastructure for passengers. If the announcements are made for new high-tech trains, the fares could automatically end up on the higher side when they launch. But we will have to wait for the official announcements that Sitharaman is about to make in her speech.

The Economic Survey tabled in Parliament on Monday revealed a significant increase in train ridership. In 2023-24, approximately 673 crore passengers traveled by train, representing a growth of 5.2% compared to the prior fiscal year.

There is an expectation from the FM to possibly announce new trains on new routes which will lead to an expansion of the Indian Railway network. Expanding India‘s railway network has been the priority of the NDA government under PM Modi.
