For those thinking of going abroad, especially on short trips, driving can be a concern and one would wonder if an Indian driving license will be valid. The answer to this is surprising, as many countries accept the Indian driving licence and here are 5 countries that allow you to drive with a valid Indian driving licence.
USA
Most states in the US allow a person to drive a rented car with an Indian driver’s license, provided that it is in English and it is valid. Along with the Indian DL, one needs to carry an I-94 form which has the details regarding the date of entry into the US. With all the documents in place, the Indian driving license is valid for 1 year in the US.
Germany
In Germany, the Indian driving license is valid for 6 months, and the DL should be translated into German. This is not mandatory though. However, what we recommend is that one carries an International Driving Permit, just to be on the safer side.
Australia
Some parts of Australia such as New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, the Capital Region, and the Northern Region accept an India DL for a period of 3 months, provided that it is in English. If not, one can get it translated into English.
UK
In the UK, an Indian driver’s license is valid for 1 year and the government allows a person with an Indian DL to drive only a certain class or category of vehicles.
Canada
Canada allows a person with an Indian driving license to drive for 60 days, provided that the DL is translated into English, and the person is carrying additional documents such as the date of entry. For any longer duration, the person has to get a Canadian DL.
