Monsoon has already reached major parts of southern and central India, and around the corners for other parts of the country. Several areas of the country face severe water logging in the two peak months of monsoon. Scenes of flooding are common across the country, making daily life difficult for common citizens.
With roads clogged, traffic movement is severely hampered during the rainy season which not only causes inconvenience to the common mass but also impacts businesses adversely. The state-owned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced on Monday that it is implementing proactive measures to address the challenges of flooding and waterlogging on national highways across the country during the monsoon season.
Measures taken by NHAI
As part of a comprehensive 15-day monsoon preparedness drive, NHAI officials, contractors, and consultants are conducting inspections along various highway stretches to identify critical areas vulnerable to damage or waterlogging. The initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted and safe travel during heavy rains.
To improve water drainage, rainwater harvesting structures are being thoroughly cleaned and desilted, while drains and outlets are being repaired to facilitate smooth water flow. NHAI is also undertaking repairs of potholes on diversions, slip roads, and main carriageways. Additionally, culverts, cross drains, weep holes, and drainage systems in historically flood-prone areas are being desilted and cleared.
In anticipation of potential emergencies, NHAI has deployed essential equipment and materials—including excavators, sandbags, and warning signage — at vulnerable sites. These resources are positioned to maintain connectivity and ensure the safe movement of traffic during adverse weather conditions.
