It’s the new financial year and with it comes stricter traffic rules. If procrastination is second nature then you have another thing coming if you don’t clear out your unpaid e-challans within three months then you could be at the mercy of public transportation as your driving license could be suspended. There is further bad news for reckless drivers, if you get three strikes or can get booked up to three times for violations like jumping the traffic signal or for dangerous driving in a financial year that could lead to the driver’s license being confiscated for three months.
Unpaid fines? Your car insurance could cost more
Based on a report by the Times of India, the government is mulling over to increase insurance premiums for habitual violators. How does one avoid this heavy fine? Simple. Just ensure that you don’t have two e-challans pending from the previous financial year. The government is looking at all options to recover the traffic fines as only 40% of violators pay the challans.
Delhi has the lowest recovery of traffic e-challans
The country’s capital led the way for having the lowest rate of recovery of e-challans in the country. According to the Times of India, out of 5.3 crore e-challans issued in 2025 in Delhi, amounting to Rs 4,468 crores, only Rs 645 crore were fined, which is only 14%. Next to follow suit is Karnataka with 21% and then Tamil Nadu with 27%. Uttar Pradesh and Odisha round up the top five worst recoveries of fines with 27% and 29%.
According to the data, the top recovery rate of e-challans in the country is Rajasthan with a massive 76%, 71% for Bihar, Madhya Pradesh with 66% followed by Maharashtra and Haryana with 64% and 62% respectively.
