Drive carefully: Your next traffic violation could cost you Rs 25,000

Drunk driving will cost you Rs 10,000 and up to six months in jail. Repeat offenders? Rs 15,000 and a two-year staycation behind bars.

Traffic in Manali

India holds the unfortunate title of the road accident capital of the world, as Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, revealed that the country witnessed over 4.80 lakh road accidents in 2023, leading to more than 1.72 lakh fatalities. To enforce stricter enforcement of traffic laws and enhance road safety, Noida authorities have significantly increased the fines and penalties for violations. Significant increases in fines have been implemented for traffic violations, especially for offences like drunken driving, riding without a helmet, and dangerous driving. The new motor vehicle offences and fines came into effect from March 1, 2025.

Drunken Driving

If you thought a hangover was the worst outcome of drunken driving then think again. Under the new rules, getting caught driving under the influence will cost you a sobering Rs 10,000 and possibly a six-month jail time. A warning for repeat offenders. They will be fined Rs 15,000 fine and up to two years of staycation time behind bars.

Driving without valid insurance or pollution certificate

Driving without valid insurance is a costly mistake as offenders face a Rs 2,000 fine and/or a possible three-month jail time, and community service. If you’re looking to push the envelope then repeat offenders will have to cough up Rs 4,000.

Traffic Discipline

If think you’re in a ‘Fast & Furious’ sequel and are caught racing on public roads or dangerous driving then get ready to pay Rs 5,000. Additionally, failing to give way to emergency vehicles like ambulances will now cost violators Rs 10,000. The penalty for overloading vehicles has also been significantly raised from Rs 2,000 to Rs 20,000.

Juvenile offenders: No more a child’s play

If a minor is caught committing a traffic offence, the parents and guardians will have to pay a Rs 25,000 fine. The fine also includes three years in jail and cancellation of the vehicle’s registration for a year. Based on the new rules the offender won’t be eligible to apply for a driving license until they turn 25.

Other common violations

Under the new rules, not fastening your seat belt, texting your BFF on the mobile phone while driving, or driving without a valid license will now cost you Rs 5,000  for each offence.
