If you live in the National Capital Region, you are more than aware how much of a nightmare the commute can be from New Delhi to Gurugram. Here’s some good news and relief for the National Capital residents, as Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has proposed a new high-speed corridor that will slash the driving time to 25 to 20 minutes. Currently, the drive takes at least an hour, and if it’s during rush hour, it could even double.

Delhi-Gurugram high-speed corridor proposal

The Union Transport Minister’s corridor proposal has a two-step plan. Reported by The Indian Express, the department is looking to construct a new route starting from Talkatora Stadium or Gyarah Murti. According to the report, this new route will help commuters cover around 30 km within half an hour.

The second option was to opt for an elevated road or an underground road tunnel that will start from Delhi-Meerut Expressway and end at the upcoming AIIMS-Mahipalpur Bypass. According to the report, a high-level meeting took place, including Gadkari and Chief Minister of Delhi Rekha Gupta, where both proposals were discussed. Once given the green light, it will ease a lot of traffic flow on NH-48 and MG Road.

Alternative routes to Gurugram

Earlier, the Union Transport Ministry had proposed an elevated road around 20 km long starting from AIIMS to Mahipalpur. Gadakari’s feedback was that this stretch alone will not be enough to reduce the traffic burden in the Central Delhi area.

There’s also the Dwarka Expressway, which starts from Shiv Murti, Mahipalpur, to Kherki Daula toll plaza near Gurugram. This 27.6 km, 16-lane expressway offers commuters an option to avoid the NH-48 chaos and link Gurugram directly to the Delhi airport.

The Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) is also in development and is scheduled to be operational in August. The 75.7 km six-lane expressway is a semicircle road that starts from Alipur in the north to NH-48 near the Indira Gandhi International Airport. This route bypasses central Delhi and eases the congestion on the Inner and Outer Ring Roads.
