Marc Marquez owned the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit as he took pole position in the Argentina Grand Prix and broke the track record to smithereens four times including once in Friday practice. The Marquez magic didn’t stop there, as younger brother Alex Marquez claimed the second place, making it another family affair on the front row. Meanwhile, Johan Zarco of LCR Honda maintained his blistering pace clinching third.
Argentina MotoGP: Marc in a league of his own
Ducati’s Marc Marquez has been inching to enter the 1 minute and 36-second mark and in his second last flying lap, the six-time MotoGP world champion clocked 1 minute 36.917 seconds. Marquez started Q2 by breaking the new circuit time he set on Friday 1 minute at 37.295 seconds with 1 minute 37.142 seconds.Â
Alex Marquez continued to shadow his elder brother on last year’s Ducati GP24 and clocked 1 minute 37.163 seconds. Honda finally had a reason to cheer as LCR satellite team Zarco claimed third place with 1 minute 37.205 seconds. Zarco showed that being the third fastest on Friday Practice was not a fluke.
Argentina MotoGP: The rest of the pack
It was a bit of a surprise to see Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia settling for fourth place, trailing his teammate Márquez by 0.351 seconds. The two-time world champion was struggling to keep pace with the top three. Meanwhile, Pedro Acosta kept the KTM flag flying high, securing fifth place for Sunday’s race. Behind him, VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio and Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo locked in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Rounding out the top 10, Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi will start from eighth, followed by Franco Morbidelli in ninth, while 2020 world champion Joan Mir completes the lineup in tenth place.
