It was a sad year after KTM and two-time Dakar winner Toby Price parted ways, wondering what the Aussie’s next Dakar outing would be on. There were chances for Toby Price to enter the race in a trophy truck and that’s exactly what has happened — Price will team up with former teammate and two-time Dakar champion Sam Sunderland for the 2025 rally.

2025 Dakar Rally: Toby Price, Sam Sunderland, and the T1+

Price and Sunderland will race this year in a Toyota Hilux-based truck for team Overdrive, and will compete in the T1+ category, alongside well-known names such as Nasser Al-Attiyah, Stephane Peterhansel, nine-time WRC champion Sebastien Loeb, and El Matador Sainz.

In an official statement, Toby Price said, “I am super excited to announce that we are going to Dakar in January with Overdrive Racing and going to jump in a T1+ car and see what we can do. The other good news is that I’ll be teaming up with a good mate of mine, Sammy Sunderland, who will sit alongside me and we’ll see what we can come up with. It’s going to be super exciting and a lot of hard work for us.

Toby Price was an unstoppable force at Dakar on two wheels as he had the ability to set a constant pace even when opening the day. Last year, he was the second fastest KTM rider and finished the Rally in 5th overall, maintaining a consistent pace. However, over the years, injuries burdened him and despite a broken wrist, Price won the 2019 Dakar Rally.

Sunderland is also a two-time Dakar champ, and he announced his retirement from two-wheel racing this year. His last Dakar win was in 2022, astride the Gas Gas factory motorcycle. The British rider was also plagued with injuries and the most recent one was a broken shoulder last year at Dakar.

Now having teamed together for 2025, the ex-motorcycle duo are expected to be top contenders in the T1+ class, especially with Price’s car racing experience. The Aussie won the Baja 400 earlier this year and has raced multiple times in Australia itself. Sunderland, with comparatively less expense in four wheels, will look after navigating the duo across the finish line.
