The 48-hour Chrono stage is complete, a 1000km two-day challenge and KTM hold the lead after stage 2, while Al-Rajhi takes the stage win in the cars category. It was not all fun as Cristina Gutierrez had to throw in the towel, while the battle is intense in the lead for both categories. The leaderboard has seen a minor shuffle and here are the highlights.

It was a third consecutive win for the Aussie on the KTM, Samuel Sanders. He finished the 48-hour Chrono stage successfully, while still being able to fend off the red armada and the Kalahari Ferrari, Hero’s Ross Branch. That said, Branch finished the stage in fifth overall but maintains his position in third in the overall rankings.

It is a bit of bad news for one of the two remaining Indians in the rally this year — Jatin Jain. The Kove rider met with two cashes today and the second one was on his back over rocks. Jain is fine and was able to complete the stage, but he was out of pace. He is not out of the rally yet and he will charge on to finish the Dakar. Godspeed!

The stage win goes to Al-Rajhi in the Toyota Hilux, while Toyota’s Henk Lategan stands first overall, snatching away Quintero’s position in the overall standings. Five-time Dakar winner Nasser Al-Attiyah came third, while teammate and nine-time WRC winner Loeb finished in sixth place after electrical gremlins made him lose time. However, after the penalties and bonuses were calculated, the stage standings are as below.

The ex-KTM duo in the Hilux – Toby Price and Sam Sunderland – finished the stage in fourth place, showing impressive performance. Defending Champion in the car’s category, ‘El Matador’ Sainz lost a lot of time in the dunes after rolling his car and eventually finished the stage an hour and a half behind Lategan.
