If you were planning on bringing a Tesla Model Y home but were not content with the range on offer, there’s good news. Tesla has quietly upgraded the battery capacity on the Model Y, indirectly increasing the overall range by 39 km. That’s a lot of additional range, which makes a lot of difference for drivers in urban landscapes. What’s even better is that Tesla hasn’t changed the ex-showroom price despite the battery upgrade.
The India-spec Model Y now promises an increased claimed range in its top-tier Long Range RWD variant by an impressive 39 kilometers. This range enhancement, which is achieved through a larger battery pack, comes without any increase in the model’s ex-showroom price, thus adding substantial value for prospective buyers.
Tesla Model Y India-spec gets more range
The Model Y, which made its debut in the Indian market in July 2025, is offered in two trims – the Standard RWD and the Long Range RWD. Initially, the Long Range RWD variant was equipped with a 78.1kWh battery pack, providing a WLTP-certified range of 622km.
The American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer has now updated the top-spec model. The Long Range RWD variant now boasts a WLTP-claimed range of 661km, a 39km improvement over its previous certification. Industry reports suggest this enhanced range is due to an upgrade to an 84.2kWh battery pack, which is marked by an increase of 5.2kWh in capacity.
Despite this hardware enhancement, Tesla has maintained its initial launch pricing for the Model Y lineup. The Long Range variant continues to start at Rs 67.89 lakh ex-showroom. The entry-level Standard RWD trim, which uses a 64kWh battery pack and offers a 500km WLTP-rated range, also retains its price of Rs 59.89 lakh ex-showroom.
Despite the battery upgrade, the performance metrics of the Model Y remain unchanged. The Long Range RWD trim, powered by a rear-axle-mounted electric motor, can do rapid acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in 5.6 seconds.
Updated Tesla Model Y: Any other changes?
Aside from the upgraded battery capacity and resultant extended range, the overall structure and feature set of the India-spec Model Y have not been changed. The update is expected to make the Long Range RWD variant a much stronger proposition against luxury EV rivals in India like Kia, BYD, Hyundai and Vinfast.
