Should you choose the BYD Sealion 7 over Hyundai Ioniq 5?

BYD will reveal the price list of the Sealion 7 on February 17. Here’s a comparison to see how it measures up against the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

BYD is not holding back in punches as it’s all set to launch its flagship model, the Sealion 7 on February 17. It will be the fourth model from the Chinese EV manufacturer and the bookings commenced on January 18. The new BYD EV will go up against the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which has remained unchallenged. We take a look and find out whether the Sealion 7 is a worthy alternative to the Ioniq 5.

The Sealion 7 is powered by an 82.56 kWh battery with two output options. The rear-wheel-drive version with a single motor on the rear axle has an output of 308 bhp and 380 Nm of torque. It does 0 – 100 kmph in 6.7 seconds and a claimed range of 567 km on a single charge. The all-wheel-drive model with twin motor set-up produces 523 bhp and 690 Nm. According to BYD, it goes from a standstill to 100 kmph in 4.5 seconds and has a range of 542 km. 

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 gets a 72.6 kWh battery that packs out 214 bhp and 350 Nm. It comes standard as a rear-wheel-drive vehicle and 0 – 100 kmph in 7.6 seconds. It takes the Ioniq 5 around 6 hours and 55 minutes to juice up to 100 per cent with an 11 kW AC charger 10 per cent to 80 per cent with a 150 kW DC charger in 21 minutes and with a 350 kW in 18 minutes. According to ARAI, the Ioniq 5 returns a range of 631 km.

BYD Sealion 7 vs Hyundai Ioniq 5: Features

The Sealion 7 and the Ioniq 5 are feature-laden and are equipped with a panoramic sun roof, 20-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, ADAS suite, tyre pressure monitoring system, a 360-degree camera and rain-sensing wipers. The BYD EV has a slight edge over its Hyundai counterpart as it comes with 11 airbags as compared to 6, two wireless phone chargers, a rotating 15.6-inch infotainment, a 12.3-inch display and a 12 speaker sound system. The Ioniq 5 has a bigger driver’s console with a 12.3-inch display and all seats get memory function.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is priced at Rs 46.05 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. It will be interesting to see if BYD can competitively price the Sealion 7 when it officially reveals its price list on February 17.
