Hyundai has scrapped plans to transform its premium brand, Genesis, to an all-EV lineup, according to various industry sources and reported by The Korea Economic Daily. Earlier, Hyundai announced plans saying that all Genesis models sold from 2025 onwards will be electric.
However, the company has made changes to the plan after EVs saw a slowdown during the second half of last year, and instead make hybrid vehicles. In line with its modified plans, Hyundai will be launching the first Genesis hybrid with a 2.5-litre engine next year.
The South Korean carmaker will first equip the hybrid engine in the G80 sedan and the GV70 SUV, before other models. For Genesis, the model lineup includes G70, G80 and G90 sedans, as well as the GV60, GV70 and GV80 SUVs.
According to the Daily, Genesis dealerships in the US have asked Hyundai to develop plug-in hybrids, however, the company has not decided on that yet. Currently, Genesis has three all-electric models, the G80 and GV70, based on ICE models, and the G60, based on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, which also underpins the Ioniq 5.
Hyundai does not sell the Genesis brand in India but sells electric vehicles in the form of the Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, the latter brand being Hyundai’s sister company. Apart from the two, Hyundai has plans to launch an all-electric version of the Creta in India, a market that has seen exponential growth in electric mobility.
