Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that the much awaited e Vitara sales will begin from September end. The country’s largest automobile four-wheeler maker will aim at rolling out 70,000 units this financial year. At the Q4 results call, Maruti Chairman R C Bhargava said the bulk of these EVs will be exported as the company achieved a record of 332,585 units, resulting in a 17.5% increase compared to the previous year’s 283,067 units. This marks their fourth consecutive year as India’s leading passenger vehicle exporter, contributing nearly 43% to the country’s total vehicle exports.
Revival of small car segment is a must: Bhargava
Domestic market growth in this financial year remains subdued with Maruti Suzuki recording a modest 2.7%. The forecast for the industry continues to be 1-2%, which does not help in the growth of the automobile sector. Bhargava explains that the key to market revival is the growth of the small car segment. He further said it’s wrong to think that Indian car customers are now more focused on expensive cars as “88% of the country’s population cannot afford to buy a car above Rs 10 lakh”.

This raises concerns for the automobile market, which experienced a 9% decline in the hatchback segment this financial year. Bhargava said, “The high cost of regulatory measures has made small cars expensive leaving two-wheelers will continue to grow as there isn’t a viable four-wheeler solution for them.”
